Emulator Issues #11957
closedFeature request - Copy game to RAM upon start
0%
Description
I know that the DVD drive of the GameCube and the Wii is much slower than the speed of any hard drive, but hear me out. Because of limited internal storage on my laptop, I would like to simply have all my GC and Wii games on my 4 TB USB external drive. However, when loading games directly from the external HDD, there's additional stuttering that is not present when loading from an internal SSD. This might also be related to me having every single game compressed, but it only happens when lodaing off the external drive. I can copy the games that I want to play to the internal storage and use the external storage as a "fridge", but what would be more convenient is an option to copy the entire game to RAM upon start and just load stuff from there. My laptop has 32 GB of RAM, so it can handle any Wii game being loaded fully to RAM. Of course, not all users would be able to take advantage of this option, but not all users can take advantage of rendering at 4k with 8xSSAA either for example!

There are a lot of solutions to this that you could do yourself, such as a ram disk or only copying the game you are playing through to the internal disk. But I guess we coooould do this if we wanted to so, eh.

The point of this option would be to automate and streamline the process of loading games that are in an external drive - having to manually copy them to the RAMdisk defeats the point, might as well just copy them to the internal SSD then. And yeah, copying the game I'm playing through to the internal storage is what I'm doing right now. It would just be nice to be able to load them directly off the internal drive without adding stuttering in the process!
I understand it's very low priority and unlikely to happen, but might as well suggest it. I wish I knew programming, then I would just do a pull request lol.

For what it's worth, an external drive shouldn't be that slow, so I'm not sure why you're getting stutter from it. Is it an old drive with only USB 2.0? If that's the case, you should consider shucking the drive from its stock enclosure and buying a new USB 3.0 enclosure for it.
