What's the problem? Describe what went wrong.

This game is a visual novel / adventure game and features text that appears as the characters say their voiced lines, but at random individual Japanese characters fail to appear properly when running the game on Dolphin.

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Launch the game on Dolphin
  2. Start the game and make a new file. Select the top option to start a new playthrough.
  3. Play through (you can skip the intro cut scene with +) until you get to the part where you must use the Wii Remote to select the female character. Select her and observe as the text starts to scroll.
  4. Observe text characters appearing being delayed and look for gaps where some characters are not appearing at all. It seems to be fairly inconsistent when the characters will fail to appear, but it seems to consistently affect similar characters for each box.
  5. Press the minus button to view the text log. Observe that the same characters are also missing in this menu. Sometimes, however, you can get the characters to re-appear in their text entry in the log by advancing through more text boxes and closing / re-opening the log.

Image showing the issue
This can be seen in the image above, in which three Japanese characters are not rendering correctly.

The issue is demonstrated in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGnI3cp1fTU

Is the issue present in the latest development version? For future reference, please also write down the version number of the latest development version.

Yes (5.0-15443)

Is the issue present in the latest stable version?

Yes, present in both 5.0 and latest beta channel (5.0-15260)

If your issue is a graphical issue, please attach screenshots and record a three frame fifolog of the issue if possible. Screenshots showing what it is supposed to look like from either console or older builds of Dolphin will help too. For more information on how to use the fifoplayer, please check here: https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=FifoPlayer

See video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGnI3cp1fTU and drive folder: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Fu4PdVjHFfsbCjLDNzOeKXWLSlb-fjA3?usp=sharing containing fifolog. More info below.

What are your PC specifications? (CPU, GPU, Operating System, more)

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor
Windows 10 Pro Build 19043
Nvidia RTX 3060
16gb RAM

Is there anything else that can help developers narrow down the issue? (e.g. logs, screenshots,
configuration files, savefiles, savestates)

I've placed a fifolog in this folder on a screen where the text failed to render, as well as the above screenshot and video file from YouTube, as well as a save state to quickly get to where the issue is occurring.

Try changing to safe texture cache in graphics settings -> hacks

That did the trick! Thank you!
I did actually try messing with that setting as I read the tool tip that said it caused text to garble, but I just noticed that when I start the game it ignores what I set it before launching the emulator and sets it to the middle value, so it never applied.
I appreciate your help & quick reply :)

Ah, I see. Whoever previously reported this must have said that Medium works. So, we'll have to change the INI to put it to safe.

Ah right, gotcha, so I suppose this is a really easy fix, just updating the config for the game ID somewhere.
