Emulator Issues #12758
closedNew Super Mario Bros. Wii: With BT passthrough, controllers won't connect or drop out constantly
0%
Description
Not sure when this issue began, but for a while, running this game with BT passthrough is impossible, cause it will not connect the controller(s) at all, or there's constantly drop outs.
This is basically what happens:
I start the game, I try to connect my Wiimote, and it will just not connect - except later (while constantly pressing buttons to make it retry) it will, only to drop out after a while.
It's like the connection is active intermittently as expected, and then it's not - rinse and repeat till the end of time.
This is an issue I don't have with any other game from what I can recall; they just connect - one controller, multiple controllers, doesn't matter - all the other games just work as expected regarding the controller connection through BT passthrough.
Here are some details:
- I'm using the Orico BTA-403, and while testing I'm only using 1P, so I'm avoiding the known issue with multiple remotes seen here: https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Bluetooth_Passthrough
- I'm always using the latest dev build while testing this.
- I'm currently running Windows 11 as my OS, but I'm pretty certain that this has issue long before Windows 11 was even released.
- The only thing that's modified with the game is that I'm running it with a texture pack; loading custom textures and precaching them, which is something I do for every game that's a great one available.
Tell me if you need more details.

There's enough variance with things like USB ports having different latency and outside signal interference that I'm not entirely convinced there is anything we can do about this.

It would be one thing if all titles had the same issue, but now it's sort of reverse.
For example, I was playing Kirby Return to Dreamland just before trying NSMBW again, and it was spotless from beginning till end - not even a hint of lag talking about the connection quality.
It's only this very title that is affected by this issue.
Now, if the issue is unsolvable despite what's described, I totally respect that - you're the ones developing the emulator and actually know what you're talking about, but hopefully you'll find a cause and solution one day.
Thank you for your time.

For reference I'm now using the UGREEN USB Bluetooth 4.0 Receiver Adapter, as per the Bluetooth Passthrough wiki page to avoid being affected by any referenced issues, especially the second one which is very topical:
"Has issues with games which send a lot of commands (including New Super Mario Bros. Wii and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword before you get in game)."
Even though my previous adapter wasn't known to be affected by it, this should even farther rule things out.
The same problem occurs regardless of which adapter I'm using.

- Status changed from New to Questionable
Considering the difficulty of using Bluetooth Passthrough mixed with the fact that Dolphin has limited control over this - the game has most of the tools, I can't really say why this would happen. I'm guessing some kind of interference or bad connection.
I had some other people testing Bluetooth Passthrough the past week, and none of them reported this issue. It's going to be difficult to mark this as accepted unless we have some kind of confirmation as to why it is happening or a bisect to a particular build.
