What's the problem? Describe what went wrong.
I usually play on Dolphin by starting the Wii Menu first. However, every time I try to load it, the emulation shows an error shortly after I press "A" that says "Dolphin will likely now crash or hang.Enjoy." Then I press "Ignore", and the emulation freezes.
That's the most typical scenario, although the timing of the error isn't always consistent. Just before I wrote this post, I waited some time before pressing "A", and the emulation froze on a black screen, whereas it usually freezes just while the Wii Menu is fading into view.
Also, this problem doesn't seem to be happening to any other game. I tried loading Pokémon Battle Revolution directly from the Dolphin catalog, and it ran fine.
What steps will reproduce the problem?
- Open Dolphin.
- Go to Tools > Load Wii System Menu 4.3U.
- In the relevant build versions, when the error shows up, click "Ignore".
Is the issue present in the latest development version? For future reference, please also write down the version number of the latest development version.
Yes, version 5.0-16039.
Is the issue present in the latest stable version?
[Yes/No and version number here]
If the issue isn't present in the latest stable version, which is the first broken version? (You can find the first broken version by bisecting. Windows users can use the tool https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-green-notice-development-thread-unofficial-dolphin-bisection-tool-for-finding-broken-builds and anyone who is building Dolphin on their own can use git bisect.)
I don't remember exactly which version is the first broken version, but I do remember that I first saw it in one of the 5.0-1600X builds.
If your issue is a graphical issue, please attach screenshots and record a three frame fifolog of the issue if possible. Screenshots showing what it is supposed to look like from either console or older builds of Dolphin will help too. For more information on how to use the fifoplayer, please check here: https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=FifoPlayer
[Attach any fifologs if possible, write a description of fifologs and screenshots here to assist people unfamiliar with the game.]
What are your PC specifications? (CPU, GPU, Operating System, more)
MacBook Air (M1, 2020)
CPU: Apple M1
RAM: 8 GB
GPU: Integrated
OS: macOS Monterey 12.2
Is there anything else that can help developers narrow down the issue? (e.g. logs, screenshots,
configuration files, savefiles, savestates)
I've attached a screenshot of the error it shows.

Ok, it looks like the Wii Menu now works without freezing as of the latest release (5.0-16083), so that's good! It's gone wayyyy too long unaddressed.

Never mind, it still has freezing problems, although they seem to be sporadic. The first time I loaded the Wii Menu with the latest dev release, it ran fine, but then froze in the Forecast Channel after I left the full-screen window. The same thing happened the 2nd time when I was trying to move the full-screen window up from my MacBook screen to the TV, but this time it happened on the Wii Menu.
It seems like Dolphin's updates have just been getting buggy, I hope these issues get fixed soon?

This isn't an issue I've ever run into myself; the system menu behaves fine for me.
Are you using dual core? If so, does the issue still happen when using single core?
I don't recognize that "Wii Room" channel. Is it a ported version of the Japan-exclusive "Wii no Ma" channel? Do you have any other unofficial channels installed?

- Status changed from New to Invalid
This is an issue caused by the Wii NAND getting corrupted by some action. Either it's overfilled, a ticket has been added that shouldn't have, a ticket has been removed that shouldn't have, etc.
I've tried a NAND like this on real console before and it crashes, thus this is not a bug in Dolphin.
I do think it's too easy to corrupt your NAND in dolphin, however, but that's a separate matter altogether. The Wii File System is just fragile.

Hm...maybe that could be the reason, because of the unofficial in-development channels I installed.

Possibly. Resetting your NAND to clean should stop the crashing. I know Dolphin shouldn't crash ever, but with NAND stuff it seems to be inevitable with how fragile their file system is if anything goes wrong.

I understand. I feel a bit uneasy with resetting the NAND, but at least there's an explanation for the issue.
