Description

Game Name?

Mario Kart 64 for WiiWare

Game ID? (right click the game in the game list, Properties, Info tab)
(Tested multiple WADs)
NABJ01 (000100014e41424a)
NABE01 (000100014e414245)

MD5 Hash? (right click the game in the game list, Properties, Verify tab, Verify Integrity button)

What's the problem? Describe what went wrong.

The problem only occurs in NetPlay. When you select a course with multiple players (Grand Prix or otherwise) some courses are too fast. The problem seems to get worse the more players you have playing in the round.
Even courses that aren't super bad with 2 players can be unplayable with 4 for example. The best example of this problem however is in DK Jungle Parkway.

What steps will reproduce the problem?

Reproducing this is easy. Merely starting NetPlay with multiple players will reproduce the issue. You don't need to have other people actually connected to the lobby, you can have multiple controllers setup to get into multiplayer to reproduce this bug. I have tested this with multiple WADs. Dolphin settings don't seem to matter in reproducing this bug.

The easiest step by step way that I could suggest for someone who hasn't played this game to reproduce this bug would be:

  1. Make sure you have 2 controllers configured and start NetPlay. (Or have friends help)

  2. Press the 2 player (or more) versus mode.

  3. Select any character (it does not matter).

  4. Move the selection to the Special Cup and select DK Jungle Parkway (should be the first option).

  5. Behold lightspeed gaming.

Is the issue present in the latest development version? For future reference, please also write down the version number of the latest development version.

Yes it is. Version 17199

Is the issue present in the latest stable version?

N/A as the latest stable version doesn't have NetPlay

If the issue isn't present in the latest stable version, which is the first broken version? (You can find the first broken version by bisecting. Windows users can use the tool https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-green-notice-development-thread-unofficial-dolphin-bisection-tool-for-finding-broken-builds and anyone who is building Dolphin on their own can use git bisect.)

I'm unable to find a version where it works properly.

What are your PC specifications? (CPU, GPU, Operating System, more)

Intel I7-10750H
Nvidia Quadro RTX 5000
16GB GDDR5 ram

This is a game bug preset in the Virtual Console Release.

Can you elaborate? The VC version to the best of my knowledge was not online capable and this bug doesn't happen locally it ONLY occurs with NetPlay.

I also do not remember this bug with the original VC release but I haven't played that in well over a decade so I might be forgetting.

I have a video of it but due to internet issues with my ISP I can't upload it to youtube, I'll be sure to update when I can.

Finally managed to upload it. As you can see it's quite literally unplayable.

I might be misremembering, but I was pretty sure the game had a bug with Special Cup on the first course (the Jungle level) where everything was much faster than normal. It should restore to normal on the next race.

It's been a decade since I played it but I'm pretty sure this is the case.

Since the bug only happens when using netplay, could you check if the bug happens with dual core disabled?

  • Subject changed from Mario Kart 64 WiiWare multiplayer running too fast in NetPlay to Mario Kart 64 (VC) - Certain Tracks run too fast in Multiplayer.
  • Status changed from Working as intended to Accepted

I apologize, there are differences to how this behaves on console. I tested this on N64, Wii VC, and dolphin and the timer is definitely incorrect in Dolphin. Most N64 Emulators have the same problem, but it's odd that Dolphin running the VC N64 emulator behaves differently Wii running the VC N64 emulator.

Tested this and there is no change to the problem

Just as an additional note the problem will open up to more courses the more people you have. With 4 people previously unaffected courses like kalimari desert and others become super fast.

The game changes a VI register on N64 which is unemulated in most N64 emulators. I'm guessing the Wii VC emulator does something hacky to make it work in Wii VC, and we don't support it.
