Description

I've this issue when playing games.. the LAG in new areas or new effects
happen, looks like things are getting buffered for the 1st time they get
displayed.. and sound keeps repeating last phase for 1-3 seconds..

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Start a Game and play
  2. Will feel it so much while playing "TATSUNOKO VS. CAPCOM"

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
-Happens with almost all Dolphin versions up to SVN 4728.
-Windows 7 Ultimate x64
-AMD Phenom II X4 955 @ 3.20 GHz
-Radeon HD4850

Happens with both DX and OGL plugins.

SSBB: Fire Emblem stage; when it changes area, stutters about 5 times. Metroid Prime;
sometime stutters while shooting. I think it's known, it has to be some error or
inefficiency, since loading is way faster than on the real wii/GC.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom used to work nicely in previous revisions using watchdog 10, but
in newer ones (like r4697) it's totally unplayable.
Oddly enough, SSBB got quite the opposite result: while the PAL version was only
"half-playable" under watchdog 15 in older revisions, the Japanese version in r4697
runs nicely (stutters a bit sometimes, but not absurdly like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom)
under watchdog 30.
What happened? The developers are prioritizing some games and undeserving others?

Yep, we want it to be a zelda only emulator.
So we're breaking random games we don't like hehe.

Oh really... ¬¬
So I guess it'll soon be rendered useless.

As long as SPEED drops below 100%, you WILL experience stuttering. No doubt.

this isnt really a issue. I don't have any stuttering issues and this is the first time
anyone has told me of such issue.

@ ayuanx Speed dont drop belw 100%. it's a lot like a hang for some moments.
@ ChaosCode do you have "Tatsunoko vs. Capcom" ? If so and it runs perfect can you
post SS of your config please?

@kimokimo1, the speed is only updated on a per second basis.
You won't see it drop before you feel it.
On the contrary, first you feel the momentary hangup then you see it drop.

And PS: the momentary freeze is caused by burst of File IO or Texture decoding, i guess.

Whatever is it is man, it doesnt happen twice on same effect..
I mean, if you do a "Haduken" for example, only the 1st one lags.. then you can ho
Hadukens with no lags.. same at stage loading and so on.. that's why I said it's
something that gets cached maybe..

kimokimo1, you are right. It gets cached and that is why it does not happen the
second time. There is no way for us to get rid of the freeze (needs a faster PC) Do
you agree to close this issue?

If you say so sir... I thought my PC was powerful :D

you dev's are big assholes ! the stuttering is definiatly an issue because in 2.0 there is no stuttering in any game. the newer the revision the more worse it gets.

Starfox Adventures runs in full speed on my rig (60FPS/60VPS) but it lags so hard that its unplayable.
Metroid Prime Other M runs in full speed but it lags everytime the player shoots, jumps, opens a door and so on. In boss fights its almost unplayable.

Dont try to teach me that my pc isnt powerful enough, i have a Phenom II X6 1090T @ 4.0GHz on an ASUS Crosshair 4 Formula with 8GB Corsair XMS3 1600MHz DDR3 Ram and a GeForce GTX 480 @ 580 Clocks.

Everytime where you dont know what causes a problem you simply change the issue status to invalid. Sorry but this is no support.

The games you are playing in Dolphin are Gamecube and Wii games. They are not PC games. Because of this, the Dolphin emulator requires a bit of time to translate the game from a Wii game to something your PC understands. This process is not instantaneous because of this, you will notice pauses and slowdowns.

The emulator will also become slower as it becomes more accurate. In Dolphin 2.0, Starfox Adventures and Metroid Other M didn't even run. That is the trade-off we have to take.

A question: why the first time you load for example Mario Kart Wii, in the presentation of the circuit, you get always a lot of lag/freezes that don't appear if you race again on that circuit or even if you close Dolphin and then load again the game?

Actions #17

Updated by skidau about 13 years ago

That is because of the Shader cache. After the first time, the shader is written to the disk cache which makes the subsequent times faster.

Actions #18

Updated by Christian.Gschaider.CG about 13 years ago

if its because of the shader cache then tell my why the stuttering is back again if i restart my pc ? and starfox adventures did run in 2.0, tested it yesterday, sure it had a whole lot of bugs but it runs without stuttering, and this shader cache thingy is just some shit, if it is cached to disk why does it stutter after a complete restart ?

Actions #19

Updated by Christian.Gschaider.CG about 13 years ago

also if its because of the cache tell me why its not slower if i disable all caches in debug mode ? i think theres something wrong with that cache story.

Actions #20

Updated by skidau about 13 years ago

So, in comment 16, the stuttering does not appear after restarting but in comment 18, they do appear. The shader cache works only on dx9 and dx11. So if the stuttering does not come back after a restart, it is due to the shader cache. If the stuttering does return after a restart, it it is the general slowness of the emulator.

But since you know so much, how about you submit a patch to fix it instead of complaining about the lack of "support"?

Effectively, compared to Dx9, OpenGL has less stuttering in Mario Kart Wii the first time you race on a circuit (WinXP 32bit Ati hd4850)
