What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Start Viewtiful Joe
  2. Play for a while until game inevitably hangs
  3. Pull out hair
  4. Rinse, repeat

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected output is the game doesn't hang, but oh, it does.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
R5021, x64, with Vista x64. Using ATI Mobility 4670, d3d plugin

Please provide any additional information below.
Game hangs regardless of whether JIT or JITIL is used. I've noticed this
hanging at mini-boss or boss stages. For example, game hangs just as slot
machine comes out to introduce first mini-boss at first level, or if you
die while fighting the helicopter boss at the END of the first level the
game also hangs.

Adding to this in case it helps:

I've noticed that while the game does hang seemingly randomly in certain places, in
others it happens all the time. For example, the game hangs randomly at the slot
machine, while if you die while fighting the helicopter boss at the end of the first
level, the game goes "CUT! CUT! CUT!" and the screen goes black and ALWAYS hangs.

Update: The game does NOT hang with R4724. So, this issue is most likely attributed
to the fifo changes made soon after that. This is also most likely the same issue
that broke Batallion Wars and other games (see here for an example):

In case it helps, I've noticed that even with R4724 it's hit-or-miss. In some
areas, later builds crash, and in others, this build crashes. It's really
frustrating. Playing the game, it's like you're fighting not only the game itself
but the emulator. I've had to re-play the same scene 20 times after beating it just
to get to the next stage since it constantly hangs. Most of the hangs occur right
after you defeat a boss, or you die. When you die, the screen turns black and sits
there.
