Emulator Issues #240
closedSkies of Arcadia Legends - bad sound / graphics glitches
0%
Description
What steps will reproduce the problem?
- Open Dolphin R880 (or later revisions)
- Choose OpenGL or DirectX plugin (it doesn't matter)
- Open Skies Of Arcadia legends into the emulator and play
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
- Depending of the scene of the game, the image is completely red (I joined
a screenshot of that issue). As you can see, this bug is random and doesn't
appear everytime. (SOA1.jpg : The bug itself, SOA2.jpg : A working part of
the game) - The sound is strange. The music seems to have many "holes". (even with
"Anti-gap" checked) - Rarely, some artefacts appears (you know, like when your overclock your
graphic card way too much ? Some polygons doesn't appear propely for some
miliseconds (so it's very hard to get a screenshot of that)) - Not the most important bug, but the ingame text have some little bugs
(like a "a" that replaces a "r" for 0.1sec). - Some framerates problem too, but I don't think it's game-related.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
- I just tested Dolphin R890 x64 without success. Both OpenGL and DirectX
has this problem.
I'm using Vista X64 SP1 with a Q6600 @ 3Ghz and a Ati HD4870X2
Please provide any additional information below.
I'm french so it's very hard to explain my bug, but I'll try to test
anything. I've tried TLOZ : Wind Waker which doesn't have these bugs so I'm
pretty sure those are game-specific bugs.
Also, thank you really for this emulator. I'm surprised how well it works.
When I tried it, I though it wouldn't go past to the menu when I tried
Skies of Arcadia Legends but except those bugs it works really fine.
Updated by Nintendo.Wii.DS about 16 years ago
I was able to take some screenshots of these artefacts. I noticed something strange
while playing : These artefacts doesn't seem to be random. For example, the big
artefact in SOA3.jpg was shown in every loop of the Vyse standby animation.
Updated by Nintendo.Wii.DS about 16 years ago
Improvements : The framerate seems smoother with DX9 plugin. Also, artefacts seems to
have disappear.
But now, the OGL plugin doesn't work anymore (doesn't show the introduction proprely)
but well, this plugin always made crashing the games I'm playing so I suppose it's
just an outdated plugin.
Updated by Nintendo.Wii.DS almost 16 years ago
Revision R1854 : Still not working :
Plugin DX9 works but have these bugs I already reported,
Plugin OGL doesn't show the intro video, the menu and ingame doesn't show dialogues
Updated by Nintendo.Wii.DS almost 16 years ago
Revision R2256 (With OpenGL plugin) :
Graphically almost perfect. Shows the intro video, the menu works, everything ingame
works (no more "red scenes" like I showed in SOA1.jpg and no more artifacts too). It
seems that Aika's weapon is transparent (but I don't know if it's a bug or not
actually, i'll check that out) and in a particular part of the game, Vyse's shadow
was teal (should've been black).
The sound is still glitchy but I'll make a video to show what's the problem because I
can't describe it clearly with my poor english.
Sometimes, the framerate is low (~17FPS) but it doesn't seem game-related (Super
Mario Sunshine have the same problem)
Updated by Nintendo.Wii.DS almost 16 years ago
Sorry for the monologue, but I'll sum up here the current noticiable bugs of Skies of
Arcadia under R2256 :
WITH OPENGL PLUGIN :
- The shadows of the characters appears proprely but doesn't have the right color
(sometimes teal, sometimes red, minor bug) - Sometimes, the game hangs up (a freeze that needs to restart the emulateur, major bug)
- "Not the most important bug, but the ingame text have some little bugs
(like a "a" that replaces a "r" for 0.1sec)." => This bug is still present as of R2256 - "The sound is strange. The music seems to have many "holes". (even with
"Anti-gap" checked)" => Same thing here : The voice of the characters are correct but
the music have huge problems.
WITH DIRECTX9 :
I simply can't start the game. It says my graphic accelerator is too old, and doesn't
support hardware VP or software VP. I have a 4870X2... Epic Fail ?
Updated by Nintendo.Wii.DS almost 16 years ago
WITH DIRECTX9 (R2285) :
No changes here. All the previous bugs are present.
Updated by Nintendo.Wii.DS almost 16 years ago
R2614 :
DirectX9 Plugin : This plugin will just give a black screen, however the emulation
seems to work (sound present but no picture)
OpenGL Plugin : Works. Still the "glitched-letters " issue (which seems also present
in Pokemon Colossus). But in the game itself, defeating the second boss will always
give the same "TLB memory map read" (or something close to that) error and make
Dolphin crashing.
Updated by starfire144 almost 16 years ago
Well I love this game as well and just to let you know I am about 20 hours into it
and just defeated the second gigas. I am using the opengl engine as it is more
stable. I have found that turning the antialiasing off will reduce the letter
scrambling that you see sometimes. Here is a detailed list of options that I have on
in dolphin to play this.
main config. all basic and advanced settings on as well as auto hide cursor.
Graphics. fullscreen, native resolution, use real XB, keep 4:3 aspect ratio, crop,
video modes 1680x1050, force bi/trilinear filtering is OFF, antistropic filter 1X.
all advanced options off except copy EFB to system ram with hotkey on( sometimes get
a memory error or windows will turn it off....)
Sound... all on..... still crap sound though.... need a new plugin..
One minor glitch that made me switch to dx9 plugin was after you rescue fina and are
back in your hometown you may have issues with your menu until you get rid of dracha
at vasar or wherever it is.
One irritating glitch happened to me when crossing the south sea going towards the
western continent. After a battle I had a 50/50 chance of locking up... probably
from the wind tunnels. Just use your save state midway through your battles there.
Disabling the EFB seemed to help there as well.
Hope this helps you and I hope you enjoy the game.

Opps and my specs are vista32 amd phenom 2.5ghz 2gigs ram and an nvidia gtx280....
oh forgot to mention that I had less glitching overall in dolphin when I took out my
memory stick that I had readyboost on.
Updated by Nintendo.Wii.DS almost 16 years ago
Hello starfire :)
Finally a Skies of Arcadia player :p !
When I'm trying to beat the second boss (at the very beginning of the game with only
Vyse and Aika) I always have a crash ... I'll try your settings to see if it changes
something or now ;)
Anyway thank you ;)
R2642 report : XTRA Krezzy (or a nickname close to this) made some changes into DX9
plugin. Well, sometimes, pictures are better than words :
OpenGL Plugin :
http://shunyweb.info/Dolphin/dolphinOGL.jpg
DirectX9 Plugin :
http://shunyweb.info/Dolphin/dolphinDX9.jpg
Notice the FPS. DirectX9 doesn't show Sega logo, doesn't show introduction video,
hardly shows the main menu (only the clouds of the background of the menu appears, no
"New Game", no "Continue", no "Skies of Arcadia: Legends"). And ingame well, pictures
shows it. I also had unknown GPU opcode with DX9 plugin.

got Dolphin first of all i cant find the game but only on torrents this is bad for me
T_T can u help me find it in a non torrented form ?
Updated by alan over 15 years ago
Plenty of copies on eBay. Not cheap mind, but it's there if you want it. Can always put
it back up when you've finished playing it. Failing that, go hunting around your local
game shops. You might be able to get them to contact you if anyone trades it in, that's
what you can do at my local gamestation.

R4062 : Graphics seems to have improved although I haven't tested it that much
(tested w/ OpenGL plugin, Skies of Arcadia hack enabled). Otherwise the sound is
still glitchy. I've recorded a bit of a music ingame where you can find here :

The music should be like that : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhtvaZf2YvM

This issue is still not fixed after roughly a year. I do not want to be mean or
something like that, but it's a shame since many bugs submitted recently were fixed
before this one. Even bugs concerning the Wii emulation ( ! ) took the priority on
this one. I know that you're making amazing work on this project, but could you at
least confirm that you're still conscious of the existence of this bug ? As it
appears closed it seems that you're not working on it anymore =/
Regards.

I just wanted to add some of my finds that I have archived at:
http://forums.ngemu.com/dolphin-discussion/111495-skies-arcadia-emulation.html
With the current SVN builds, OGL with SoA projection renders scenes fine without the
red, but the "shadows" that cause the red scenes appear turquoise/green, and I found
a supposed link between character model, shadows, and the red scenes that you still
see in DX9. (See wireframe screens in topic).
Sound, as everyone knows, is still partially emulated. Hope this information can help
Dolphin emulate SoA:L perfectly soon.
Updated by actact9999 almost 15 years ago
on some parts the game is ok but with oblong shadow that keeps spinnin around and in
some there is that red overlay problem similar to this one

ive been a massive SoA fan since it debuted on dreamcast and followed up with the GCN
version, which i like a hell of a lot more. easily my favorite rpg.
anyways. i recently remembered it and loaded everything up on my pc (i own all the
actual items, not a pirate), downloaded dolphin, etc., and played it for the past
couple days with very few minor problems.
however, now when i try to play it, i can hear the wind whipping at the intro scene,
but the screen is completely black and i can't do anything. i looked all over for a
solution, but either no one seems to be talking about it, or no one plays SoA
anymore. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

You are getting black textures because the skies of arcadia hack has been removed, as
you can see here: r5271
So, it would be nice if some dev can restore this hack because it is needed for this
game.

Dolphin 2.0 and it's still not working?.Im getting tired and i miss the game a lot iplayed this one un my dead dreamcast but i want to play the legends game.I hope for a real fix for this awesome game.

Would someone please test Skies of Arcadia against r6225 with the OpenGL plugin? 6225 has fixed a fair few of the projection bugs.
Updated by Nintendo.Wii.DS about 14 years ago
With R6225:
http://hfr-rehost.net/http://self/pic/118f2095f42f03a7308922014b33e2cb01c0accc.jpeg
Projection bug is still here, the text bug I related 2 years ago is still here (ie the text isn't properly rendered, on this screenshot the character should be called "Alfonso" and obviously the text is: "Haha We've finally found here".
Most important bug, the sound bug is still here and (very, very) annoying.
Updated by Nintendo.Wii.DS about 14 years ago
Forgot to write: Obviously, with the "Skies of Arcadia" projection hack, the projection bug disappear.
Updated by mariagoitea59 about 14 years ago
That's not true i put the hack before i play the game but it getting of when i go to hack menu again it's off, why.

Skies of Arcadia still has sound and graphical problems...
Updated by scam.ray about 14 years ago
Former Issue 1994 is still the worst problem. I can live with bad sound and graphic glitches, however, not seeing anything at all and thereby not being able to proceed in the game is a game breaker.
Updated by Cristalbelial almost 14 years ago
Do not worry they wont fix this issues,i tell you this because a hundred of times send a message to the guys but no one seems to cares about that issue.

the red "shadow" is actually a blocking volume, not sure why its showing maybe someone can figure that out
Updated by pua4life about 13 years ago
I am playing this game almost perfectly. Only bug I see is little red circle below characters. And thats it.
For sound, you have to enable LLE plugin and also LLE on thread. If you have dual core cpu,you cant forget playing this game with normal sound, because LLE on Thread option needs 3rd core. So you need atleast cpu with 3 cores ( amd made them ) But I am not sure if those are powerfull enough,so I would still recomend faster quad core such as i5 or i7.
Even then, sound will still skip at animations,as game will slowdown below 30 fps.
What needs to be done is go to the game properties and enable "accurate vbeam emulation". This speeds up game considerably, and now I am running full speed with LLE with no issues-sound is perfect.
Updated by Nintendo.Wii.DS about 13 years ago
Wow, this issue is now 3 years old.
pua4l...@gmail.com, your solution does work. With my 2500k@4.6Ghz, I have no performance issues, even without the accurate vbeam emulation trick.
So it means the LLE plugin works perfectly. But as it takes almost 100% of each core of my CPU, I'd say it still requires optimization.
But as said previously, there is also this shadow bug issue. Plus, the game won't work without the hack. Still, thanks for your message for the sound fix :)

I upgraded my Dolphin emulator to 3.0-191 and have now frequent and random freezes. I'll try to narrow it to the first revision with this bug.
Updated by sitonitandrotate almost 13 years ago
I've been without a computer for over a year. SoA has gone back and forth a lot with different graphical errors over the years, but the current one is pretty bad. Almost everything renders totally black. Anyone know what was broken and when?
Aside from current build being very unstable and crashing on any game after a few minutes, last stable public release doesn't run F-Zero GX and hasn't been behaving well with any Wii game that doesn't let me fall back on Gamecube input. 2.0 works pretty well, save for many Wii games not being fully emulated back then.
And I do apologize for the whining. I won't rule out my being inept at configuring things properly and I don't put blame on anything/anyone in particular.
Updated by Autoran1 over 12 years ago
The issue is mostly fixed for DX9 and OGL some minor issues are left no SPS and red screen, DX11 still has stuff to fix, instead of red things became dark
Updated by ZaffireWolf about 12 years ago
I feel that I can help clarify the symptoms hinted at above.
The sound issues do sound as if they include various gaps, but the instruments that can be heard also sound like trash MIDI, blipping and blooping like an Atari. Perhaps there are unsupported instruments?
The issue with the shadows appearing red and green appears to derive from the way the shadows are rendered. The red portion actually appears to be a three-dimensional object, as if meant to be an invisible indicator that displays the shadow in any object it passes through, typically flooring.
At one point under DX9 or OpenGL, textures of background objects might appear over textures of foreground objects (as witnessed in the opening). This points to layering issues. DX11 just doesn't seem supported.
Dolphin 3.0 64bit. Win7Ult 64bit. AMD 4-Core, MSI R7950.
Hopefully this report has clarified the symptoms of the game's issues to more accurately typify its compatibility rating with this emulator.

Issue 2843 is about colored shadows
and Issue 6148 is about DX11 plugin
but this issue is mixes them all in one, sound and graphic issues with different nature i don't think this is right, i close it

Dear God, everybody seems to share simliar problems, totally figures that no one has posted anything about what my problem is...I cant get past the title screen. I press enter to skip the opening cutscene, then press it again to skip to the title, but then, when the option to select "new game" or "continue", NOTHING. Do I need a controller to play or something? This is my first time ever using an emulator, and I can't even describe the joy that overcame me when that opening cutscene started, becuase I was sure it wasnt gonna work, but of course, now I cant even start playing. Any advice??
Updated by metafalica over 10 years ago
Err... what means NOTHING? Emu crashes, hangs, freeze or what? You written a lot of junk, but missed the most important part.
Or you don't know you should map keys (virtual gamecube gamepad -> keyboard) to play on emulator?
Key settings presented in Gamepad button in upper bar and has gamecube gamepad on it.
