Description

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Use Directx9 plugin
    2.Play the game
3.Wait for bluescreen that can happen anywhere, in menus, ingame, cutscenes,
    pause screenes

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
It should normally work. Instead I get random bluescreens. Not a single one
twice. I had BAD_POOL_CALLER, some directx error, random stops that didn't hint
at anything, some errors for .sys files. Sometimes it plays for hours, sometimes
it crashes after 2 minutes, 10 minutes, or 20 minutes.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Release Candidate 1, 64 bit version on Windows 7 64 bit

Please provide any additional information below.
The problems all occur in the directx9 plugin. I'm running an AMD quadcore and a
Geforce 8800 GTS 512MB.

This definitely sounds like an hardware issue, could you check with HWMonitor or some
other tools the temperature of your CPU/GPU ?
Also, is it overclocked ? And is your RAM correctly configured ?

Actions #2

Updated by WC-Predator about 14 years ago

are you using a asus + nforce mainboard with an outdated asus chipset driver?
then you should try the nforce chipset driver from nvidia

Actions #3

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

I just had a SERVICE EXCEPTION bluescreen and also a IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL.

I use a Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H mainboard with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition.
It is not overclocked and my RAM is correctly configured.

My CPU temp is 31 idle and 40°Celsius - 42°C when playing. My GPU is 60°C idle and
70°C when playing.

Oh and also I forgot to mention that I never had any bluescreens on this setup, and I
am playing a lot of games, never had problems, the first are with this emulator.

only in dolphin? that´s weird

Actions #6

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

Yes, I'm getting them only in Dolphin. Playing for hours in other games (Left4Dead 2,
Dirt 2, Borderlands, Bad Company 2, GTA 4 all works flawlessly for hours, no heat
problems either. The PC is running almost 24/7, never had a single bluescreen with
this setup so I was doubting that it is a hardware issue.

I also tried all kind of settings already, safe texture, frame limiter, standard
settings, really tried all kinds of combinations. The crashes also occurred in
Twilight Princess (Gamecube).

tried it in newest rev?

Actions #8

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

I tried it with the 2.0 Release Candidate 1 ( think thats the newest) and tried it
with some older versions, always the same result.

Is there anything else I can do? Updated drivers, directX and everything. Some BIOS
setting? Its really annoying because I'd love to play them on my PC, they look so much
better than on my Wii.

Actions #9

Updated by WC-Predator about 14 years ago

2.0 is old
get 5284

Actions #10

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

I don't understand it, how/where do I get it? I found this link: http://
code.google.com/p/dolphin-emu/source/detail?r=5284# but how do I get it? Confused, he.

Also, why isn't that the new one? From the download section it looked like it was the
newest one. Ah well, would be nice if you could show me how to get it.

Actions #11

Updated by WC-Predator about 14 years ago

http://www.emucr.com/
2.0 is the same like around rev 5136 i think but maybe more stable

Actions #12

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

But the newest on there is r5280 and not 5284. Where do I get that one?

Is there anything changed that could fix this awful bluescreen horror?

Actions #14

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

Here I was hoping. :( It froze again, with frozen sound resulting in a BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
noise (but there was no bluescreen following like most of the time so I just pressed reset.)

I only changed the resolution too, and used the Direct3D plugin.

Is there something else I can do? Some bios setting?

Actions #15

Updated by WC-Predator about 14 years ago

all drivers up-to-date?

Actions #16

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

GPU drivers updated, DirectX latest update... Yeah.

I don't know what else I could do. My PC runs all the games I tried beautifully even with high
anti aliasing and now it always crashes. :(

Actions #17

Updated by WC-Predator about 14 years ago

hmmm... it must be any conflict with hardware
i´d think you´re the only with this prob
happens with opengl?

Actions #18

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

I never played a long time with opengl as the frame rates I get with it are horrible. I'll try
it now.
Should I also update my BIOS? On the website it shows 2 new bios versions http://
www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=3342&ver=#anchor_os

Actions #19

Updated by WC-Predator about 14 years ago

that´s your decision
bur be careful

Actions #20

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

Well I did it a couple of times before, the question is just if that could help because you say
it seems to be a hardware issue. I don't know what else to try, as everything else works fine
and I see nothing that I could change to fix it. :(

Actions #21

Updated by WC-Predator about 14 years ago

i don´t know if it helps you
you can only try it
maybe you can test a new xp on a other partition to get an answer if it is your hardware

Actions #22

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

No I can't do that.

I'll try OpenGL now, but even if that would work it would still be with bad FPS and I wouldn't
have a solution for the direct3d plugin either.

Actions #23

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

Ok tried it in OpenGL now and got a bluescreen with dxgmms1.sys

Actions #24

Updated by sl1nk3.s about 14 years ago

could you test your RAM with some software like memtest ? (see :
http://hcidesign.com/memtest/)
Unstable or dead ram stick can cause this sort of issues, it could be that, but it
could also be any other driver screwing up Dolphin :/

Actions #25

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

Tested the Ram for 70 Minutes now with no error.

I updated the directx, I updated my GPU drivers. What else could it be? Seriously, only in
this emulator (other emulators as well as tons of PC games work like a charm without any
problems like this)

Actions #26

Updated by skidau about 14 years ago

Sometimes it's the sound driver. Try upgrading or downgrading the sound driver.
I've had this problem with C-Media audio chipsets.

Actions #27

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

I have Realtek High Definition audio. Did it cause bluescreens for you too? Would simply
removing the driver help determine whether this is the issue or not? Or do I have to install
random revisions of the driver. Currently I have the up to date one.

Update Chipset driver (AMD Chipset Driver)

Windows7 64bit download

http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Driver/motherboard_driver_amd_chipset_8-series_win7.exe

Actions #29

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

Installed that, after that I got another dxgmms1.sys error, installed another version of my
nvidia drivers, then got ntfs.sys bluescreen which I didn't have yet. Awesome.

Is this just coming randomly now? Just random bluescreens? This is annoying as hell.

Actions #30

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

Additionally: Could this be caused by bad/faulty compressed images?

Actions #31

Updated by WC-Predator about 14 years ago

i don´t think so

Actions #32

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

I turned off dual core in the options and it worked for 2 hours. Then I turned it back on, got
a bluescreen after 5 minutes and an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, although the memtest showed no
errors.

Actions #33

Updated by WC-Predator about 14 years ago

cpu driver installed?

Actions #34

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

I installed that chipset driver somebody linked above.

Actions #35

Updated by WC-Predator about 14 years ago

you need an xtra driver for the amd cpu´s to optimize them, maybe this can help

Actions #36

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

Do I need to take the dual core optimizer? I don't find a link for quad cores.

Actions #37

Updated by WC-Predator about 14 years ago

i can only found them for xp/s2003

Actions #38

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

Tried it again now with dual core disabled, again I could "complete" the game twice, while it
crashes before I can finish it when I have dual core enabled. Is there a setting I could try?
What could be the problem there or what else could I do to fix it?

Actions #39

Updated by skidau about 14 years ago

Yes, I got blue screens with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and BAD_POOL_CALLER when I was
using the latest C-Media sound drivers and running emulators and a few games.
Everything else worked fine. Try uninstalling the sound drivers.

If you are sure it is not the CPU overheating, try using safe and slow BIOS settings
related to the CPU, Video and PCI bus.

I know how annoying these problems are - rebooting Windows every 2 minutes ain't fun.

Actions #40

Updated by iJohnnsen about 14 years ago

Okay I narrowed it down now. It is the dual core mode. Every time I enable it it runs at
awesome speeds but it crashes within minutes. Got a nice SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION once I
tried it now.

I:

  • switched the ram around
  • ran mem tests
  • reinstalled gpu drivers
  • installed a chipset driver update
  • reinstalled directx
  • installed dual core optimizer from AMD
  • uninstalled sound driver
  • downgraded sounddriver
  • reinstalled sounddriver
  • downgraded GPU driver
  • ran defragmentation, registry defragmentation

And it all helped exactly nothing. :(

Thats hard ^^

Actions #42

Very useful comment.

Actions #43

Updated by skidau about 14 years ago

Try adjusting some of the BIOS settings related to the CPU, PCI and Video. Sorry, I
can't be more specific than that.

Also test if the "lock threads to core" option makes a difference.

Dolphin does not enable any special code in dual core mode. The option runs the
graphics code contained in the video plugin from a separate thread.
