Description

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. On systems with intermittent FPS dropping
  2. Disable - Enable Dual Core will create smooth but slow FPS
  3. Some System are cutting in and out of the Enable Dual Core Dolphin
    setting while in Play

What is the expected output?
To Bring this to the attention of people working on Dolphin, May result in
smoother FPS and more stable EMU.

MY system:

AMD Phenom 8650+ Triple Core Processor 2.30Gig
4Gig DDR2 PC8500 (1066Mhz)
Nvidia Geforce 9600GT DDR3 1G - Driver 197.45
Main-board - ASUS M3A78-EMH HDMI
VISTA Ultimate 32Bit

Dolphin v2
Dolphin r5442

Running Gamebooster 1.4 Before Launch Dolphin.

I believe I have found a error regarding the Slow down and loss of frame
rates on some systems.

It dose not matter how I set Dolphin my Frame Rates are 60-55min FPS but I
get a slow down intermittently to 25 FPS

My Friend has few PCs in his home, One the same as mine but a Dual core
with 2gig RAM and a Geforce 8500. His frames do not drop and sit at 50-55 FPS.
Also he has a Quad core systems AMDs 3GIG with on-board ATI 4200 2gig ram
sheared no frame drop and sits again at 50-60 FPS.
Both his systems windows XP.
Dolphin Settings are 100% same as mine as I took My Dolphin's there.

My test was running gamebooster to shut-down Vista to get it close to XP's
non GUI style.
Result error still there games all run 70plus FPS and it drops at random to
same 25ish FPS.

TEST that makes me believe I have found something needing to be brought to
attention.

My System:
Turning off - Enable Dual Core in Dolphin:
Game runs at the very speed that the slow down drops to, game dose not
change in speed as before with drop and runs very smooth only at the sad
25ish FPS.

Friends PCs:
Turning off - Enable Dual core in Dolphin:
Both Systems Run at almost Identical speed of my system, minus the one or
two FPS different due the Different CPU core speeds.

Conclusion: Maybe a Error with Enable Dual core in Dolphin dropping out and in.

Question: My AM2 is far faster than his AM3 but would that affect this?

I have know Idea why this is maybe the way Dolphin talk with Vista for the
CPU...

Would like to see others try this and see if its the same for them.
Any reply would be nice to read.

I am sure I speak for everyone when I say the hard and amazing work put in
by all the people working on Dolphin is incredibly and amazing.

OK well I have been wanting to do this for a while but the ASUS M3A78-EMH HDMI
motherboard is not new almost 2 years I have had it and though she is faster than my
mates new systems I wanted a little upgrade anyway.

Suspecting that the older style Phenom CPU though faster than my mates may have been
written differently than newer ones I wanted to upgrade the CPU. By ASUS the
motherboard will not take newer CPUs in fact according to them it dose not support
the CPU I have had in it for 2 years a AMD Phenom 8650+ Triple Core Processor 2.30Gig
95W (HD8650WCGHBOX) Asus state this board only handles 85W Max and certinly nothing
like the Phenom II AM3 range. I noted the current CPU I have is almost on part with
the spec of the certin Phenom II's.

The ASUS M3A78-EMH HDMI will take a AMD Phenom II X4 945 AM3 95W (HDX945WFGIBOX) how
do I no this? its what I placed in my system yesterday and it detected everything
fine and is running better than a NEW PC in performance.. Comparing it with a my
mates new AMD PHENOM II X4 965 AM3 3.4 GHZ QUADCORE [HDZ965FBGMBOX] running with ASUS
M4A89GTD-PRO DESKTOP MAINBOARD and 2Gigs DDR3 PC10660 (1333Mhz) my benchmarks are
better and everything is noticeably faster. Note This system of his was the second
test used to see the above results.

NOW how has this affected Dolphin?
Again It dose not matter how I set Dolphin my Frame Rates are 70-55min FPS but I
get a NO slow downs at all, Oh and not using Gamebooster.

What is Different in the CPUs I do not know but the problem is gone, My suspicions
would be the way the CPU communicates.

What I would like to See in Dolphin is a drop down selection to select the number of
cores you want to use of your CPU so we can use Tri and Quad for more speed and
smoother FPS.

Oh Please Note People with older AM2 Motherboard like myself may want to look at
http://products.amd.com/en-us/

As seen here for M3A78-EMH HDMI
http://products.amd.com/en-us/MotherboardDetail.aspx?id=86&f1=&f2=&f3=&f4=&f5=&f6=&f7=&f8=&f9=&f10=

on this information where AMD Platform Components [compatibility with the product
chosen] you will find it will link you to a AMD Phenomâ„¢ II X4 125W to use with the
M3A78-EMH HDMI, Showing by there tests 125W run fine also though I dread to know the
heat in the system.

I hope this helps Both Dolphin and other users experiencing this problem.

Dolphin is truly a remarkable emulator and the people who have work on it are amazing.

  • Status changed from New to Invalid

FPS drops could be caused by CPU and/or GPU overheating and downclocking.
