Description

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Play Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  2. Notice buzzing, especially during a 3-minute or more match with a few friends.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Instead of proper sound, Dolphin produces buzzing, or "electrical" noises on top of the game sound. This is distinct from the "crackling" sound which was fixed by the godly r6041 commit.

Dolphin version with the problem? Other Dolphin version without the
problem?
r6064 x64 on Win7x64, although I've had this problem all the way from Dolphin 2.0 -> Latest SVN revisions.

I have the same exact problem!

Sounds occasionally get bugged and start making smaller buzz and noises first, and then escalating to untolerably loud noises, which cover the original game sound / music almost totally. "electrical" noise pretty much describes it, like you said. This happens more likely when you play with multiple friends (3-4 players), I don't think it has happened to me when I have plaid alone. Don't know if it has something to do with the extra load more players bring to the game? I have tried to disable the audio throttle, and limit the speed by fps, but it won't help.

Win 7 64-bit, with Dolphin 2.0 to latest 64-bit SVN revisions.

Brawl's game engine produces a loud buzzing sound when it crashes. It also makes this sound if the game is suspended, such as when pausing/dumping RAM with WiiRD. See this video. Is this what you're hearing?

I haven't heard that high frequency a buzz. And that buzz completely eradicates any other sounds. The buzz I hear sounds as if it's overlayed over the rest of the audio.

I just played through Single Player and didn't experience any issues like you're describing, also tried on R6164 with only the occasional lose of one sound channel.

Don't have any friends to test this in Multiplayer unfortunately.

Is this the same issue that happens with Donkey Kong Country returns in the intro video and the video for the final boss? The noise is a really loud, high frequency buzzing noise that drowns out the audio in the videos, if there is even any audio under the loud buzzing. This issue happens with both the HLE and LLE plugins, all backends are affected so I can only think that it's an issue with the mixer or some other code the LLE plugin shares with the HLE plugin.

It sounds just like the same noise, yeah.

and in Sonic colours Ntsc sometimes happens this bug

I've got this issue, too, but the buzzing promptly stops when the match is over.
However, it's prone to come back in another match, especially when playing with friends.

Also, when using the LLE recompiler, you can hear a light version of the buzzing in every match, but it never escalates to an intolerable buzz like it does with HLE.

I get this also, we call it "sudden death mode" if the match starts to go too long (Although sometimes it can happen quite early into it) the buzzing appears can evetually make the game unplayable, causeing us all to try and make the match end.

after the match is over it goes away and waits till it may rear its ugly head in another match or so.

stuffing around with most settings dosent seem to alter it. and it has happened on many builds for me.

Im using a Cmedia HD sound card (rather than onboard realtek) which has been playing up for a while now, this seems to be apprently only effecting a few of us so whats everyone else using?

Sudden death mode, rofl. That's exactly how my friends and I treat it, too.

I'm using onboard realtek, fwiw. I'll upload to youtube a video for comparison with the buzzing in DKCR, if someone requests it.

guess that destroys my sound card theory. I wonder what it could be then and why it seems to be effecting so few of us?....using Win7 x64 just for the record...

Still happening in r7280. Changing the backend from DirectSound to XAudio2 eliminates all problems.

have you guys tried lowering the volume?
i also had problems with the buzzing sound every minute, but when i lowered the volume to 50 i think it started to work :\

Can this be closed as of r7468 ? I can't test it right now.

Actions #17

Updated by jackroberts06 almost 13 years ago

I'm pretty sure you can close this. I can hear the buzzing in r7467, but not in r7468. Thanks for the fix!

as of a few versions ago (I update frequently so I'm not sure exactly which build)
it seems to be happening again, even while using XAudio2 backend. I noticed the texture errors (when your character goes out of the screen and the marker appears) have re-appeared also. which build would be the most compatable for playing brawl then if anyone is willing to suggest?

The buzzing is difficult to reproduce in single-player, so let me run several multiplayer games and see if the buzzing comes back. I tested several, though, before I reported the fix.

This is an interesting issue in terms of debugging, because it's so difficult to reproduce it regularly. When it does happen, the audio is totally intolerable.

Buzzing can be reproduced in r7683 doing a regular brawl with 4 players approximately 2 minutes into game.

Actions #22

Updated by willthingy about 11 years ago

getting this on a friend's desktop PC. brawl, 3 players, starting with annoying buzzing then elevating to really loud buzzing. does not happen on most of the PCs I play on. also does not seem to happen with 2 players, and buzzing is much worse on the "Spear Pillar" stage.

Actions #23

Updated by aavindraa about 11 years ago

Yeah the sound issues in this game were horrible. Most of them got fixed, but the Spear Spillar stage buzzes louder than the bowels of the devil himself.

Actions #24

Updated by jackroberts06 about 11 years ago

Yeah, I'm still getting this, too. Only happens with 3 or more players, it seems. I've been getting it on NSMB with 2 players as well.

Actions #25

Updated by Tareck117 about 11 years ago

I'm still getting this too. It happens when i played with 2 friends or 3 cpu. It also happens when the giant ball of the super scope gun touchs his enemy or in the metanight stage.
FIx this plz...

Also getting this, usually when the match goes on for a bit with 2+ players involved.
Honestly haven't pinned down specific trigger events as of yet.
Will keep an eye out, though.
Thanks!

brobinson, which revision of Dolphin were you using?

Actions #28

Updated by jackroberts06 about 11 years ago

I'm still getting it with the latest revision, skid. Only with 3+ players in SSBB, or 2 players in NSMB.
I can actually reproduce that super scope gun stuff that Tareck mentioned. I can make a log, if it would help.

Actions #29

Updated by skidau about 11 years ago

Jack, are you using getting the issue in 3.5-1093 or later?

Actions #30

Updated by jackroberts06 almost 11 years ago

I'm struggling to reproduce it now, but I'll do some more intensive testing and get back to you if anything comes up.
Is there anything particular I can provide that would help you once I reproduce it?

Actions #31

Updated by skidau almost 11 years ago

Just a detailed list of steps to reproduce the problem would be helpful.

Actions #32

Updated by jackroberts06 almost 11 years ago

Well, I've been struggling to reproduce it recent revisions now, so I'm going to go back to an older one to see if something's changed on my end or if the issue has been fixed.
Can someone else try it with recent revisions and see if they can get it?
BTW Skid, thank you for trying to help, I know I'm not of much assistance, but this has always been a really strange bug for me and it's tough to reproduce consistently.
