Emulator Issues #3780
closedNew option "emulate format changes" causes noise/static in some games
0%
Description
What steps will reproduce the problem?
- Set this option on and load games like Mario Kart wii or Goldeneye
- Get ingame and observe the gfx
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Colored static appears (only in fullscreen) in some games. I thought since this is more accurate the only downside would be a speed hit. But it looks like it still needs some work.
Dolphin version with the problem? Other Dolphin version without the
problem?
r6669
32-bit or 64-bit and any other build parameters?
64bit
OS version and versions of tools/libraries used?
win7
Please provide any additional information below.
Also, in the screenshot you'll notice boxes around the characters. I found that's caused by the "Pixel Depth" option enabled. Not sure if you want me to bug it. That's another one of those options that I thought could only improve the gfx, but not in all cases I guess.

Can't reproduce this, could you upload a screenshot of your video config? (but upload it on an external image host please)
Updated by Rhodan81 almost 14 years ago
I have the same problem in Wii Sports Resort. Only with "emulate format changes" enabled.
Updated by hatarumoroboshi almost 14 years ago
And what's the problem in disabling it?
Updated by NeoBrainX almost 14 years ago
.. that it shouldnt cause any issues? ...
Updated by hatarumoroboshi almost 14 years ago
I tried r6678 with this option enabled or disabled (Dx9 plugin) and had no problems at all (32 bit though)...real problem is OpenGL where almost everything is black (Mario Kart by night?):-)
Updated by Rhodan81 almost 14 years ago
@hatarumo Please make a new issue for your problem as it is obviously a different one.

@Neo
Here's how I can reproduce:
Copy dolphin .zip (from Mammario's site) to a new folder, unzip, boot, change to DX9, render to fullscreen AND change to max res. Now launch Mario Kart Wii, get in game and there's all the noise. If I switch it to 640x480, there's no static.
So it looks to be triggered by higher resolutions.
My rig: Core2Duo e8400, GTX460, 4 gig ram, Win 7 x64.

@wespipes: don't you find it a bit strange aways having trouble with high resolution? Take issue 3751 for example :)
Updated by Rhodan81 almost 14 years ago
This is indeed caused by high resolution. The only resolutions that have this problem are 1280x960 and 1280x1024. All lower resolutions work fine.
Updated by NeoBrainX almost 14 years ago
You still haven't showed me your video config guys.
Updated by NeoBrainX almost 14 years ago
Still can't reproduce this with a display resolution of 1280x1024, fullscreen, EFB scale at integral, ...

I haven't changed any game specific settings btw.
Updated by NeoBrainX almost 14 years ago
Still can't reproduce it; Try disabling OpenCL and hires textures.
Updated by Rhodan81 almost 14 years ago
Some problem with those options off.
The problem only occurs while playing one of the subgames in Wii Sports Resort (like Wakeboarding or Skydiving...).
I probally should have mentioned that alot earlier.
Updated by NeoBrainX almost 14 years ago
Well I just tested MKwii right now.. which works fine whatever settings I'm using.
Updated by wespipes69 almost 14 years ago
Well what kind of setup do you have Neo? :) Did you follow my steps from above? I don't know what to tell ya. Maybe it's a hardware, driver issue? My Dolphin config is vanilla (as detailed above). Something else is going on here. But continue to let us know what we can do to help fix this. It sounds like the option should be on all the time for accuracy - and that's what I likey!!! :P My rig can handle it.
@bgtsetso:
Don't start being cute and blaming me for some of my reported bugs. I know what I'm doing here and I know these 2 issues are valid. Go look at my history and the massive amounts of bugs I've logged here. I've spent a lot of time investigating my issues and pinpointing the exact revision that caused the problem to do my part in getting it resolved.
Something with Dolphin lately is triggering these issues when running in hi-res's (and at least this one is confirmed by another user). I don't know what it is, but it's there. What could I be doing to cause bars in RE4 or noise in MKWii? Its the emu dude....
Updated by NeoBrainX almost 14 years ago
I'm using the default settings as well (apart from using DX9), my hw is an Intel E8600 (DC), an ATI 3850 with Catalyst 10.12 installed and I'm using 64 bit builds..
Fwiw, you tried on a clean build as well, didn't you?
(Btw what about answering in issue 3751? :P)
Updated by wespipes69 almost 14 years ago
Another nvidia/ati difference then? Not sure what else it could be...
And it looks like another fine gent commented and confirmed issue 3751.
Updated by skidau almost 14 years ago
Yeh, I'm not getting the RE4 nor the MKWii issues on my ATI 4870. It's probably only occurring on nvidia cards maybe with a certain driver.
Updated by wespipes69 almost 14 years ago
Maybe. I'm using the latest 260.99 official nvidia drivers for my gtx460 with nothing special on in the nvidia control panel.
Updated by Rhodan81 almost 14 years ago
I'm using the latest drivers 260.99 as well for my gtx 470. Maybe it really is a driver/card problem. I'll try running it on my notebook.
Updated by kostamarino almost 14 years ago
I'm also using 260.99 with an nvidia card (9600gt) and get the same issues as above. Static at full hd resolution (fullscreen) and the speed hit is enormous for this game (half speed than before with this option enabled, maybe even more).
Updated by Rhodan81 almost 14 years ago
I just tested it on my laptop (nvidia 8600gt). Same problem there.
It appears you need to set a certain resolution for the error to appear. In Wii Sports Resort it appears with resolution 1280x960 and higher as mentioned above.
I also tested Mario Kart Wii and had no problems (1280x1024). My guess is you need an even higher resolution for that game to reproduce the error, but I can't test that because my monitor doesn't support higher resolutions.
@wespipes69 It would be interessting to know at which resolution Mario Kart Wii breaks.
Updated by Ajkmetiuk almost 14 years ago
here only buggy with rockband 3, mkwii runs fine with this option...
Updated by Hefran64 almost 14 years ago
Hmm... these transparency glitches at certain resolutions look like they might be related to the problem I described in r6678.
Basically, if I use a resolution higher than 1680x1050, (or resize the viewport in any way) some effects in Tatsunoko vs Capcom which should be transparent appear solid black. This problem persists even if the viewport is resized back to a small resolution.
This happens on a nvidia GTX460 when using the OpenGL plugin. Under D3D9 the effects are always solid black, regardless of resolution.
I have reproduced this bug on a nvidia GTX275, using drivers 160.99, 265.90 and 266.35.
Unfortunately I don't have an ATI/AMD card to compare the results.

This happens for me on the title screen of harry potter and the half blood prince.
However, the option doesn't do anything detrimental to MK:Wii for me. In fact, it actually makes the colors look slightly better.
I'm also using nv 260.99 drivers w/gtx280...
Updated by Anonymous almost 14 years ago
Just upgraded and tested 266.58 nv drivers, no change.

just happened to find the same problem in The Conduit:

Try again with r7062, please. Try both D3D9 as well as D3D11.
Updated by Rhodan81 almost 14 years ago
Tested it with r7063 and had no more problems. It seems to be fixed (at least it is for me). Works well in both D3D9 and D3D11.
