Emulator Issues #4307

Description
This is not really an issue, at least its not a tech-related issue, but a design-ui issue to me.
We all know that Dolphin stable releases are a major point in the emulator, and we try to get the best of the svn until now. Since we're making something that important, I'd like to suggest to change that old-web 2.0 styled glossy logo to something more stylish and better from a design-wise point.
My point is just to change the logo to something else that would help the emulator to get a better and "cooler" look along the cleaner UI. The frontend on an emulator like this one should be clean and new-looking. I know this is not a competition either, but the pcsx2 people changed the design a while ago too, again, to something more stylish ;)
This is a logo I made a while ago for dolphin, as we know, dolphin started as a Gamecube emulator and that's why the logo would be nice if it had something related to it... along with a nice dolphin, you know, people loves dolphins ;)
Here is the full-size (the source is vectorial, so I can make it giant if I wanted):
http://i52.tinypic.com/9lfhvs.png
And here is an example of it on 64px size (tile-view in XP for example):
http://i54.tinypic.com/25514er.png
The thing is, Im not asking for my logo to be used, if someone can do something better I'd glad to give my opinion and suggestions about it. But the thing is that the old-2.0 styled logo looks outdated for today standards, and I'd love to help improving the look of the ui/project.

Agree with you!
This would have been good if the Dolphin had been given a new logo in the Dolphin version 3.0 it would be cool. Dolphin probably needs a new logo = D
Updated by shadoweffex almost 14 years ago
I create logo's too from time to time, but I'm not sure if Dolphin really needs something new at this point. I believe a poll on the forums would be a good idea to find out if this the case. And if so, create another poll to vote for a 'new' and 'updated' logo.
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
Well, Neo, you tell me. Shall I create a poll on the forums to ask if we should change or mantain the current logo?
Im totally for a cooler-sleek new logo, something fresh. I spent 7000 revisions already with that old one after all :P
Also, I'd like to see if anyone has another logo for dolphin (besides mine). Feel free to post them here and we shall discuss about them. I believe we should be looking to something modern and nice. Also, remember it needs to be something simple and "flat enough" (It needs to be at a smaller size for the icon).
Updated by marcel.werner3 almost 14 years ago
I think the current logo is ok...if there is to be a new one, I would suggest it should include the unique feature of Dolphin being an emulator for Gamecube AND Wii...yours, alforata, doesn't look bad or anything, it's just too Gamecube'ish in my opinion :)
Updated by NeoBrainX almost 14 years ago
I'd not create a discussion about "should we create a new logo for Dolphin" but rather actually CREATE one and propose it as the new one... since the former poll is unlikely to result in any new logo.
Agreeing that it shouldn't be the logo of a gamecube or something though.. looks kinda weird for a wii emu ;)
Updated by William79371 almost 14 years ago
I suggest that the new logo should be a picture of the GameCube and Wii simultaneously on an image for it's a GameCube and Wii emulator.
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
Well, I added a simple vectorized wiimote I did now. I believe this looks much much better, since like you guys said, this is no gamecube emulator anymore :)
If I get the ok from you guys, I'll create a topic and propose it for the logo.
64px (It looks really good to me, at least from a design-wise point):

Looks good, pretty clean...almost too clean, if you ask me...it lacks a bit of personality if you know what I mean.
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
I was kinda afraid of that...that's why the first icon was a stylish gamecube with a dolphin logo on it. This one is the same but with an added vectorized wiimote after all, no much of a change to me. It's still clean and unique.
Maybe only using the wiimote?

My suggestion is using the current logo, but in higher resolution: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/84/Dolphin_Logo.png
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
But the logo icons must still have a 32-64px size for smaller views and it would look exactly the same on the Windows superbar for example. Also, I must say that these gradients are totally web 2.0 aged, the texture below was unnecesary and its too generic to me.
We should be looking forward to something more sleek I believe.

@ alforata.
Nice logo here, yes.
But why not show a picture of the Wii console as well?
It Would Have Been bothering fine with the GameCube console and the Wii console simultaneously. Only a pre-sale.
But the logo you cash with was very nice and clean fresh was = D
Updated by skidau almost 14 years ago
The Wiimote icon would be a good one for the toolbar.
Updated by NeoBrainX almost 14 years ago
Agreeing with skid; however I totally don't like the Gamecube part of your logo... looks kinda strange :>
Updated by SAMuhammed almost 14 years ago
I suggest that the new logo can be a enhanced version of the existing logo. Now its a 2-dimensional. It is almost a square. It can be a cube, ie 3-dimensional. And the character could be a 3-dimensional inside the cube. Color scheme is good enough. I don't find any charm introducing straight a Gamecube and Wii icons here. Let dolphin be a modified, enhanced, new look dolphin.
I hope alforata is good enough to produce such a logo. Keeping the old one with a brand new test.
Thanks everybody.

@SAMuham...@gmail.com: Nice suggestion, is some kind that will renew the emulator, maintaining the identifier of emu, something more easy to do than making an icon with GC and Wii together (we are forgoting WiiWare, Virtual Console and Triforce games compatibility?)
Updated by William79371 almost 14 years ago
Yes it's a good proposal and prepare it the old icon in Dolphin emulator and make it better.
More depth, for example and in the icon can be picture of the GameCube and the Wii maybe.
Updated by William79371 almost 14 years ago
Hi I have a suggestion here that that does not have and do with Dolphin's logo but it would be nice if you had seen a picture of NGC control if you open the GC settings.
So you can look for a GameCube control if you want to configure your gamepad. There are at least in N.64 emulator.
And then it becomes very easy when you have something to look for.
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
Ok guys...This is the real deal.
I used similar (better actually) colors, based on the original logo, vectorized a nice and smooth round cube and vectorized a 3D Mario shape.
128px:
http://i52.tinypic.com/280oxmv.png
64px:
http://i56.tinypic.com/9uym3o.png
The full size icon is 1400px x 1400px, its mainly vector but im using a psd file format just because Im using PS to draw it. Im not gonna give the source too easily though, so if we're gonna use this one, then I need an owner/commiter to talk with me on IRC about it and that way we can change the old icon to this epic one.
Any objections? :D
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
Oh also, I fixed some shading issues that didnt look good enough :)
128px:
http://i55.tinypic.com/nnr1ad.png
Now its better :D
Updated by marcel.werner3 almost 14 years ago
Hmmm, it's kinda hard to see it's Mario on this one.
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
I used a 3D mario render after all, not an old-flat one.
http://www.mariopartyds.com/misc_media/mario_party_ds_mario_render.jpg
That one to be exact. I'd have used other ones, but this one was the best-looking one to vectorize a shape of it.
Updated by NeoBrainX almost 14 years ago
The cube thing is nice, although I don't like how you put that mario inside :P could maybe look quite nice though if you apply some other effect on the mario thing..
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
Well, I tried with something more "real-like":
128px:
http://i52.tinypic.com/19w6dz.png
But...to me, from a design wise point, it destroys the minimalism of the icon. It looks awesome mostly because its simple, it works perfectly on lower resolutions like 45px or 32px. Using that "real-like" one, its just a mess of pixels.
Updated by NeoBrainX almost 14 years ago
Hmyeah, that new one does look quite cool, but not really logo-ish.. :/
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
That's what I said :)
Also, I believe that using Mario images directly would conflict with the GNU GPL v2 that this emulator is using, after all, Mario its copyrighted by Nintendo.
That's why using a shape of it its kinda "obvious" and I believe that's why a shape was used in the current icon. Also, using a shape like the one I used on the previous logo is kind of "the same logo, but with today standards" to me.
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
Also, quick update: This is how the About Dolphin would look with the simple logo plus nice font.
Updated by SAMuhammed almost 14 years ago
Thank you alforata for getting the theme right.
Here are some observations about the logo:
- The cube is nice. We are looking at the edge.
- Since there is a character inside the cube - viewing it from the side will be nice.
-New character is flat and not clear what it's action is, no outline
- can give outline and shading to give a dimensional effect
- if possible drop this, anyway I am not liking this one
- Character size is bigger than the cube
- reduce the size so that it's head isn't popping out
- Original character is missing
- Introduce the old original character
- Give some dimension and place it inside the cube almost face-to-face if possible
- color scheme is nice.
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
Im not really sure what you're trying to say about it... but:
1 - Viewing it from the side? Its not a 3D model, it was handmade using vectors. Also, it would look exactly like a square with rounded borders.
2 - The problem about the character is that if we add an outline it destroy's the original logo style. I tried to maintain the same things it had.
3 - The character is NO WAY bigger than the cube. Its an isometric-like perspective after all, so its inside to me.
4 - Im not sure about what are you trying to say with the last point, but if you wanna say "You should create an original character"...then, Im not sure. It would be the same as changing the original logo to something "too different" for my taste.

Anyways, we should remember this is an issue tracker, I posted a topic on:
http://forums.dolphin-emulator.com/showthread.php?tid=15971
So lets continue the discussion there.
Updated by SAMuhammed almost 14 years ago
-
Still it will be a cube not a square.
-
The character is a problem - get one which is more manageable.
-
The character is inside the cube. You are right. The head is popping out from the top side of the cube.
-
Sorry for using "original". Read it "existing". I asked you to use the character from the existing logo.
Updated by SAMuhammed almost 14 years ago
One more thing,,,
The front edge of the cube is not visible. That means your Silhouette mario is not inside the cube.
Updated by alforata almost 14 years ago
SAM: Go to the topic I posted, we're going to discuss it there.
Also just a quick update with the latest logo:
http://i52.tinypic.com/1zyztxw.png
The left one is the Revolution logo, the top one is the Triforce one.
Updated by William79371 over 13 years ago
I'm really looking forward to see how the new logo looks like, if it is implemented fully=D
Updated by MayImilae over 13 years ago
In my opinion, the logo shouldn't focus on the gamecube, wii, or mario. The emulator is called dolphin, the logo on the sites is a dolphin, the logo on the wiki is a dolphin, etc etc. Shouldn't a dolphin be used for the icon in the app as well?
Updated by alforata over 13 years ago
Majo: It is used, have you seen the latest logo I posted a few posts ago? That shows the Revolution logo (Wii Codename), the Dolphin (gamecube codename) and the Triforce logo (we can use that one directly because...its a freaking triangle after all :P).
Updated by tommyhl2.SS over 13 years ago
I like the logo that actually has the real "Wii" and "GC" logos on it, but I do not think that it could be used for obvious reasons. If that logo cannot be used I would just stick with the original Dolphin logo as it is now.
Updated by alforata over 13 years ago
Well, the latest changes were made in the topic I linked up there. Feel free to check it out. However since this project doesn't have "leaders" that can decide these graphical things I'm pretty much "on hold" about progress.
Updated by NeoBrainX over 13 years ago
I'm not completely happy with the new logo proposals and no one is uploading a new version of it. And the other devs fail to care most likely :P
Updated by nakeee over 13 years ago
the logo is not amazing but also not bad.
Are we going to change logo every release?:)
Updated by carlos.ismael.braz over 13 years ago
I think that the current logo is OK as it is.
Updated by Anonymous over 13 years ago
yes, the logo with mario inside the box is cool.
Updated by MofoMan2000 over 13 years ago
Close this now, since 3.0 is out the door?
Updated by alforata over 13 years ago
I believe that we should let it open since we're gonna need to discuss this later I suppose. We just need to get interest over the visual choices in the project. Since it didn't meet 3.0, it may be nice to implement it for a later release.
I'd be glad to hear people about this discussion and take suggestions, but remember that I cannot please everyone at the same time. That's why I'd prefer constructive criticism, not subjective.
Updated by NeoBrainX almost 13 years ago
Can't really use a new logo without a new logo or even just a designer who's willing to create one, so... OnHold.
Updated by parlane over 12 years ago
I wouldn't mind, we need a new site anyway.
Updated by Billiard26 almost 12 years ago
- Status changed from New to Won't fix
We do not care for any of these.
Someone can make a new issue if they have a good logo/icon suggestion.
Updated by parlane almost 12 years ago
Closed as I do not believe the designed icons are fit for Dolphin's image.
