Emulator Issues #4523
closedFreeze in Skies of Arcadia Legends

Description
What's the problem?
In Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), the game randomly freezes (no black screen, the image just freezes) during the introduction cutscene (sometimes during the cutscene, somtimes during the dialogs). Framerate just drops to 0.
Dolphin version with the problem :
r6981
r7553
Dolphin version that does not have the problem:
r6265
(I'm not sure, since it happens randomly, but that one seems "clean")
Operating system and version:
Windows XP Pro
32-bit or 64-bit:
32-bit
Game ID :
GEAP8P
Please provide any additional information below.
This happens with both OpenGL and D3D plugins. I can provide a Savestate when it's freezed, if it helps.
Thanks for all the job done so far !

I have the same problem. Is there any configuration where that doesn't happen or something? It's awful trying to play this game and have to savestat every 10 seconds.
I'm using r7633 dolphin version.

I have the same problems as well. I've got by the introduction, but throughout the game it continues to randomly freeze. It happens during cutscenes, in battles, in the menus, basically everywhere and at anytime. I've been using savestates to help me progress, but once in a while when I save a state, the game freezes so I have to load the state I just saved in to continue. Aside from the random freezing, there was the second boss fight in the game where it would always freeze if I tried to enter the S-Moves menu. I loaded a nearby save state 3 times and tried it over a few times, but it would always freeze if I tried to enter that menu.
I'm using Direct3D9, but I've tried OpenGL as well, and I've tried the different configurations I've seen from looking around on the forums, as well as the regular optimized configuration. I'm using r7647 on Windows 7 64-bit, with the built-in graphics from Intel core i5. The game usually runs smoothly, but sometimes drops down to as low as 35 fps.
The configuration I'm currently using only freezes every few minutes or so, as far as I can tell. I'll list the checked/enabled configurations:
Dolphin Config General:
Enable Dual Core
Enable Idle Skipping
JIT Recompiler
Lock Threads to Cores
Dolphin Config Interface:
Use Panic Handlers
Audio:
DSP HLE emulation
Enable DTK Music
Audio Backend - XAudio2
Graphics Config General:
Hide Mouse Cursor
Render to Main Window
Graphics Config Enhancements:
1x Native
1x Anisotropic Filtering
Graphics Config Hacks:
Skip EFB Access from CPU
Ignore Format Changes
EFB Copies - Virtual and RAM
Disable External Frame Buffer
Disable Fog
Disable Per-Pixel Depth
OpenMP Texture Decoder
Aside from all this, I wanted to say thanks for all the hard work, Dolphin has really come a long way since it began.

Hi there, just for this case i decided to make a quick account and give you the sollution that worked for me. I just disabled the dual core usage option. Since my cores are only 2.13 ghz each and it still runs smooth (except the audio bugs which are a given). So try this out ;) and see what happens. The freezes for me were caused because my CPU usage spiked to 100% and now its steady at about 60-70%.
Good luck.

A year passed and no one even looked into it, while some users pointed to "clean" revision and thing about disabling dual core support...
BUMP... just BUMP, it still has random crashes and disappearing sound in latest Dolphin GIT-700

by reading other tickets, i found someone actually tried to fix something related, but they making main point on XAudio hangs. However this hangs happens with both DSound and XAudio...

I think the problem is with the sound emulation. Go into your sound settings and change the DSP emulator engine from HLE to LLE. Now if you start it up and it doesn't work cuz it's missing a file, go to this URL:
http://www.mediafire.com/?nneuvjlti4z
and download the files and put them in the GC folder that's in the Users file in your dolphin folder. Then start up the emulator. The sound might be choppy, but at least it won't freeze. This worked for me, and I think it ought to for others.

- Status changed from New to Questionable
- Issue type set to Bug
Will someone confirm if this issue can be worked around by using DSP LLE or disabling Dual Core mode?

Have just played Skies of Arcadia NTSC-U for 20 minutes with no freeze using Dual Core, DSP HLE, XAudio2 and DX9 with default settings on Dolphin 3.5-491. My PC runs this game at a consistent 100% speed. I agree that this looks like a sound emulation issue. If the PC cannot maintain 100% speed, try switching to the OpenAL audio backend.

Issue still occurs with the latest versions (3.5-1061) and with the following ones 3.5-491/-1034/-1045/-1047 while using default settings,Dual Core,DX9 and XAudio2 or OpenAL

Confirmed. Tried just about every option I could. Under either HLE, LLE, Single Core, EFB to Tex/RAM, etc EVERYTHING I simply cannot get passed the intro.
This may help: The following dialogue occurs in the intro:
Alfonso: Attacking us?! Who would dare attack a vessel of the Imperial Armada?
Once the player presses A to continue the scene, the camera changes angles to one of the Observation Soldiers. The dialogue box opens for him to say something, a "T" is rendered into the text box and before any other characters can be printed onto the text box the game freezes, without fail, precisely at that moment every. single. time.
Let me know what kind of logs this might pertain to and I'll pastebin them.

seele, do you have a good dump of the game (checked against redump.org or played on your gc/wii)? Also, which version of Dolphin are you using?
Updated by seele over 11 years ago
Hash was different than on redump.org but it works on my Gamecube. Using Dolphin 3.5-1085 on Linux.
Updated by skidau over 11 years ago
Would you check if 3.5-1100 fixes that hang? There was a FIFO commit between 1085 and 1100 which tend to solve these sorts of issues.
Updated by skidau over 11 years ago
It works for me (OGL, LLE):

3.5-1211 still freezes. The issue seems to appear more frequently if you attempt to start the game again after the first freeze. In other words, the time span between starting the game and freezing seems to become shorter if you don't restart Dolphin and/or your system.
Also freezing is not limited to the introduction scene but occurs throught the game (after about 20-40 min in my case).

Using 3.5 stable and locking threads to cores fixed the freezing for me.
Updated by scientificraver over 11 years ago
Threads to cores was supposed to fix many things according to the wiki. But as it did only improve speed on a small number of mobile HT-enabled computers and the developers found it to be too confusing, it was completely removed unfortunately.

A few kernel and Dolphin updates later this now works for me. :\ Always feels bitter-sweet when these problems get solved yet you have no idea what caused the fix...

I have noticed that running the game at 1x Native Resolution may prevent FIFO errors (freezes).

I have a similar but apparently different problem. Mine freezes (sort of) in the Land of Ice for no apparent reason. The trigger seems to be getting too near to the Ice Ruins, as I saw them and made a beeline for them, and it happened. So, what happens is, The Delphinus stops moving. If I mash the buttons enough, I can get the camera angle to change, but it only works seemingly at random. No other controls work. All attempts to find a solution have all failed, with the exception of one; however, their solution was "clean the disk and the scanner, then try a different system or disk", which I cant exactly do. If I come into the area at an angle, the ship will jitter, as if it's trying to turn still, but will remain motionless. The sound plays, everything still moves, it essentially acts as if the controller has been unplugged. I'm running Dolphin 5.0 on Windows 10 (64x), using the gamecube controller adapter as my method of control. I have cheats enabled and only a couple activated; cheats that give me all of the discoveries, max out Vyse's and Aika's Agile, and give me infinite Moonberries. I used an Infinite Gold cheat once in the beginning, but have sinced turned it off. With that much gold, I wont need it. This is my first time posting here, so if this should have been a new thread, I apologize. Please, help me as much as you are able. If you need more technical information, tell me how to find it and I will get it to you. Thank you for your time.
