Description

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Start the pictograph quest
  2. 1st and 2nd snapshots work well, but it's impossible to get the 3rd one (the one with the couple staring at each other) correctly. 3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Should be able to complete the quest.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
In order for the pictograph to work at all, you need to play on windowed
mode with Copy EFB to Ram ticked.

Please provide any additional information below.
XPSP3 32bit r2256

Please rename issue as seen fit, looks like what's being written to ram is
not what is actually beeing seen, or there's some kind of error when
"Zelda's program" analizes the snapshot taken.

I started both... how could it be a dupe?

Issue A is how the hack is not working properly.
Issue B is about the non-hack not working properly.

I can upload a savestate should anyone want to try to get the pictograph.

Actions #3

Updated by hrydgard about 15 years ago

Yeah, without a savegame or savestate, I don't think anybody will attempt to fix this..

Actions #4

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

Savestate=bad
Gamesave=good

Savestate from another PC, with probably different revisions and different plugins,
is bad.

I am not entirely sure if this is a problem with emulation...
Back when I eliminated the loop where the game got stuck, I had the same problem
(except that i simply didnt get a picture, only a gray screen). I rather say its
difficult to get the right view on the couple; they must be in the picture
completely, not cut off, in the moment their eyes meet.

However, I still have a .gci from that time, where i was playing around with various
revs, taking backups of my saves:
http://rapidshare.com/files/198856274/zelda_tww.gci
Walk over to the Photo Guy (up the ramp, into the center, the house with the
Pictograph on top), talk to him, and then walk out to wait for the guy walking his
round. He takes quite long, so prepare to wait a few minutes...

Actions #6

Updated by federelli about 15 years ago

I've tried every possible angle/zoom and not gotten it, the first 2 shots i got
perfectly on the first try. All i can think of is that the logic behind "having them
stare" is not accurate enough or something around that area.

Ok a little walkthrough, you start on a little cove, go to the left then run straight
till u reach the docks, turn left and go uphill, up some stairs, turn left, keep
going up, if u look around u will soon reach a place with a windmill and a door that
has a camera on it. On that same area a woman on an orange/yellow dress will be
standing besides some wooden stairs, equip your pictograph and target here, make sure
her whole body is on the shot, now wait for a guy in greenish cloths to come by and
when they both look at each other, snap the shot, making sure both subjects are
entirely on the shot.
Once you've taken the shot, go inside the house with the camera on it, and show the
camera to the guy inside, then choose the photo you took, he will always say it's wrong.

http://www.zshare.net/download/5572777100e83f9b/

You've got some metroid/ssmbm/sms saves as well if you'd like to try something.
I understand this is in no way a priority.
Thanks for your time ector and xtra!

Pictograph should look similar to this, which passes perfectly on my GC.

Actions #8

Updated by federelli about 15 years ago

To all devs also!!

On that very same gamecard, you've got a Metroid save, in which upon loading and
opening the door, you will encounter the biggest slowdown in the game, which i
believe is caused by the water textures. Maybe you could look into that as well.
Please pass this along since i'm not fond of IRC.

Actions #9

Updated by federelli about 15 years ago

Last comment, could it be because the FB RAM option is 16bit color only instead of
32bit? Or is the GC's default FB copy also 16bit?

Actions #10

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

You mean that the moon works and the rest of the images work, but this doesn't pass
as the couple image?

Isn't that weird.

Actions #11

Updated by federelli about 15 years ago

?

The postman photo works, the shaking guy photo works, but not the couple.

First 2 got em on first try, 3rd impossible to get.
I get all 3 on my first try on GC also, just tried again started a new game, it's
early into the game so it took no time, on the first try i got the couple photo
correctly.

Actions #12

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

Show the full moon to the depressed man and he gives you a chart. Does that work? It
should be the simplest hit-test.

Actions #13

Updated by federelli about 15 years ago

Hmm i'd have to advance more ingame to enable day/night transitions.

Actions #14

Anyone tried anything at least? r2343 still unable to complete.

Actions #15

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

I can say that I haven't tried, only because I was too engaged in finding the pearls.
Now I just have to put them in the dollies and the tower will rise up (even though I
already have 2 triforce charts because I'm so awesome)

Actions #16

Updated by federelli about 15 years ago

Try plz!! :P

Actions #17

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

It's a very hard job to track why it doesn't work. We don't exactly know what's going
on in the backend of this picture taking/recognizing mechanism (no, there is no small
dwarf which looks at the photos inside your computer/GC/Wii ;)) I'll try doing the
quest myself on this playthrough to see whether it works or not.

btw are you the same Federelli who retextured OoT from emutalk? If so, awesome job!
If dolphin will be fast enough the cel-shaded style could be replaced with awesome
crisp textures!

Actions #18

Updated by federelli about 15 years ago

Yep it's me :), tyvm. Tho i think that to replace zelda's WW textures, the cell
shading effect (visible on characters mostly) would need to be disabled, and i've no
idea what impact will that have on gameplay.

Regarding the issue, if i had to guess, the GC does a pixel comparison with some
internal comparing algorithm, trying to detect two blackish figures at certain
positions in the shot. But i also guess somewhere it captures the "info" of them
staring at each other, and wether their whole bodies are in the shot.

Actions #19

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

no that's just insane image processing. and it would make a lot of mistakes.

Actions #20

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

My guess is, and some famous image processing experts say so too is this:

The number of possible permutations for a picture to be taken is a 6D space:
Photographer stands in X, Y, Z, aiming his camera in time T to the direction PHI, THETA.

It probably keeps these values and T is the time of day.

Actions #21

Updated by marcus about 15 years ago

what are phi and theta? a quick google reveals only "phi theta honor society"...

Actions #22

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

We define that a vector v (positioned at point p1) is "looking" towards another point
p2 when v = p2 - p1.

As the distance from p2 to p1 doesn't matter (since we are only interested in the
direction), we can remove p2's coordinates (and, in the camera case, eliminate a 7th
dimension) by regarding the direction as two angles of v from the unit vectors, phi
and theta. This is also known as Spherical Euclidean Coordinates though we do not
need the length of the vector, r.

More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spherical_coordinate_system

Actions #24

in any case, how do I start this quest? Walkthrough?

I kinda forgot :P (I have the camera though)

Actions #25

Updated by BhaaL about 15 years ago

Just walk over to the Pictograph guy and talk to him after he showed you his gallery.
Not sure, but you might have to show him your pictograph first. He should be standing
behind the counter for that.

Actions #26

Updated by federelli about 15 years ago

Yep, go to the door with the camera above it, it's in front of the windmill, on the
highest rise in Windfall Island. He'll tell you to take certain photos, 2 of which u
will get on the first try, but not the latest one.

Actions #27

Updated by marcus about 15 years ago

@XK: Thx for the phi and theta info. Sounds like something very useful :)

Actions #28

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

federelli: IIRC he only hints on what the photos should have, I want to know EXACTLY
what to take pictures of, that was my intent.

If I can reproduce this issue, I'll accept it.

marcus: np :)

Actions #29

Updated by federelli about 15 years ago

Err... phi and theta are names. As are alfa and beta.

Actions #30

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

yeah they are greek letters.
alpha beta gamma delta epsilon zeta eta theta yota kappa bla bla bla omega.

Actions #31

Updated by federelli about 15 years ago

Ok, walkthrough.

Once you get the camera man to tell you to take the picture of someone sending mail (#1).

Just go to the mailbox on windfall island, by the docks, stand close to the tree, aim
at the mailbox and when a man in a red outfit shows up, snap the photo as he's
putting the letter into the mailbox.

You take that photo to the camera man and show it to him, he'll give you the next
assignment, which is to take a photo of a shacking man.

For this you go to the cafeteria, which is above the shop were u got the sail. Once
inside, grab a pot and throw it to the man standing by the table, as soon as you do
that, pull the camera out and snap a photo of him shacking, take it to the camera man
and take the final assignment.

For this last one just wait outside the windmill, which is right across the door with
the camera, aim at the woman in the orange dress, and when a man in a green suit
comes by and they look at each other, snap the photo, take him to him and voila,
quest complete.

It's very frustrating since it's so easy to get on the GC, yet impossible on Dolphin.

Good luck!
Questions? ask ahead.

I'm here right now btw, so we can kinda chat it out if you want, you can delete the
comments once we'r done.

Actions #33

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

hehe, too bad I can't chat right now since I have to go.

It seems that Dolphin isn't getting my input for some weird reason in r2399, so I
can't do anything at the moment :(

Actions #34

Updated by XTra.KrazzY about 15 years ago

  • Status changed from New to Accepted

Accepted.

The picture taking mechanism is simple: Raytrace for the object wanted in the camera,
if not found return bad picture. Else - Check whether the actor/object is in a
specific animation (i.e. scared anim, sending anim, looking at each other), if it is,
return good picture, else bad.

The problem is probably raytracing BOTH actors... weird... this needs further unknown
research. Any ideas?

Actions #35

When you are trying to take the last picture of the man and woman staring at each
other make sure it's the right man.
Near the dock on Windfall Island, there is a big buff guy standing near the dock.
Make sure you snap you pictograph when the man that walks around all the time is
right beside her and then snap the picture.
Take my advice, don't snap a picture of the big buff guy in green and the lady in
orange. You won't be able to get them in a pictograph together anyways.......

(pictograph), which wasn't there before.

nah, it ever was there, use safe texture cache if you want it to go away :)

as for the issue, i'm afraid this could be a PPC related one :(

hihi, Wind Waker uses Peek_Color for each single pixels of the EFB when using the
pictograph :D
it causes a quite big slow down though, it doesn't take 20 seconds for me, but about
2seconds of pure freeze... unfortunately, there's no other way of doing it :(

Actions #49

Updated by Nolan.Check almost 15 years ago

Please compare the speeds with different anti-aliasing settings, and in dual-core and
single-core mode...

Actions #50

Updated by federelli almost 15 years ago

Hey there, r3818 still doesn't fix the final black and white picto-graph quest, but it
may have fixed some of the color ones maybe?

Anyone with a gamefaq save with the color pictograph could try to see if they work or
not.

Actions #51

Updated by federelli almost 15 years ago

Checking some other pictograph quests, one tells me i should take the picture from the
front instead of the back, when i AM taking it from the front.

Could something be upside down or similar? It seems like it could be an issue with
checking the framing as well

Actions #52

Updated by federelli almost 15 years ago

Taking a pictograph of Lanzo and the lady talking together inside his shop works fine.

Actions #53

Updated by federelli almost 15 years ago

Another thingie.

When EFB is used in heat effects, like torches, basically EFB should takes the image
and distort it with a haze effect. What happens is that:

-first it's not taking the correct depth, like if link stands in front of the torch,
link appears in the heat effect, which shoulnd't happen
-second the effect looks like it's been displaced to one side, like imagine u had a
background with the letters A,B and C, and a torch in front of letter B, the heat
effect is showing the C instead of the B (like it's shifted).

Hope u understand!

Actions #54

Updated by federelli almost 15 years ago

Taking a pictograph of a full moon (zoomed) doesn't work either.

Actions #55

Updated by federelli almost 15 years ago

Same speed for SC and DC here, around 6 secs of freezing.

With 2xAA, it takes like 4-5 minutes. (yes wait and it will complete)
With other modes it just takes forever. (not willing to wait :P)

Actions #56

Updated by sl1nk3.s almost 15 years ago

thanks for those tests :D

yes, i just tried with AA (8xMSAA) and it took 1mn to complete...
without AA it's much faster there, I'm using Native res, safe texture cache with copy
EFB to RAM. and no filtering to avoid altering the EFB.
I'm also using dual core but as federelli said, it doesn't make a difference there.
(E6600 @ 3.4Ghz, HD4870, 32bits)

And about PEEK_COLOR, i'm sure you'd like to take a look at that Nolan.Check :

looks like one more game using it.

Updated by Nolan.Check almost 15 years ago

Please try this patch (currently for Windows version only) and describe the
performance, if there's any difference. The sun in the Wind Waker title screen may
flicker, but just ignore that for now.

Does Wind Waker use an anti-aliased EFB? Because I hear the GameCube EFB dimensions
are 640 x 264 instead of 640 x 528 in that case! Maybe we need to correct the read
coordinates in that case.

P.S. Crud! "Issue attachment storage quota exceeded." What will I do now?

Actions #61

Updated by Nolan.Check almost 15 years ago

Of course, the patch won't work very well because it's mangled by Google Code's line

Actions #67

Updated by darkvalen21 over 14 years ago

I'm not sure if this the right site to post this, but I've been testing Z:WW, and the
random black screens happen when the music changes, for example, in Windfall Island,
there are two tracks, and when it changes tha black screen happens. It isn't a
breaking game issue since you can use an item (for example pictobox) and the black
screen goes away.

Actions #71

Updated by BhaaL over 14 years ago

That topic is old and already implemented - it dealt with the problem that ZWW was
waiting for the picture to show up in memory. Copy EFB to RAM does this.

However, the current problem is that the picture of the couple is not possible for
other reasons we dont know yet.

It eventually was peek_color causing this issue, they might be looking for the
clothes color as well as the "looking at each other trigger" or something like that...
Anyway r4034 should fix it, it might also fix the "yellow moon" (see what i mean ?
:p) quest as it now tells me that my pictograph is b&w white instead of some
meaningless junk :)

Actions #82

It works indeed, you need to have EFB to RAM and EFB Access activated, i'm not sure if it works using DX11 plugin but it does work with DX9 and OGL plugin.

Actions #83

Updated by iaml-lell over 13 years ago

Still doesn't work for me, not sure if im doing anything wrong but even with EFB to RAM and EFB Access activated and wether it is with DX9 or OGL, he still doesnt accept the 3rd picture and i absolutely refuse to cheat.

DX11 is too buggy for me so i avoid using it.

Actions #84

I have the same problem. The first picture was accepted after a few tries, the 2nd on the first try, but no matter what I do he won't accept the 3rd picture.
Tested with the latest revisions (64 and 32 bit), EFB to RAM and EFB Access activated.
Also tried to play with the configuration (DX9 and OGL), e.g. disable EFB Access which fixed the lag after taking a picture, but I just can't get it to work.

I was having the same problem with the third picture. I'm using r7668. You have to uncheck EVERYTHING under "hacks" on graphics configuration (except for "RAM"). It will run really slow like this and when you snap the picture it'll take a few seconds to a minute to register, but it works.

Was unable to get the pictograph working in any way (not even the moon was recognized). Tried a bunch of revisions and configurations, nothing worked. What finally fixed it for me was >OpenGL< ! Just switched from D3D to OpenGL and suddenly everything worked flawlessly, not even any lag/freeze after taking pictures and everything was recognized as in the original game! Try OpenGL if you can't find a solution, and just crank up the graphics settings in OpenGL to make it look (almost) as good as D3D!

Actions #99

Updated by william.ribeiro.ibiapina over 11 years ago

I've tested now with 3.0-815. Not only Lenzo didn't accept even the 1st pictograph, but the game froze when I tried a second (generic) one. I'm afraid this issue is far to be really fixed...

Actions #100

Updated by rain.rtw almost 11 years ago

I've done some testing with this in 3.0-862 and I have finally got the 3rd picture working consistently. D3D9 was the easiest to get working, just EFB to RAM and CPU can access EFB. For both DX11 and OpenGL it also had to have Anti-Aliasing set to None.

None of these things seemed to have no effect on the picture recognition: Anisotropic filtering, Scaled EFB Copy, Per-Pixel Lighting, Texture Cache Accuracy, External Frame Buffer, Enable Cache (for EFB copies section), Internal Resolution.

In the end, and in this latest version it seems all you need is to make sure EFB to RAM is set and Anti-Aliasing is turned off.

Actions #101

Updated by Raztafarian69 over 10 years ago

Using just OpenGL gets the picture recognition working for me. And EFB copies to RAM with cache enabled makes it work for me on any backend but OpenGL was the only one that allowed me to hand in the 3rd picture on the first try. Duplicated this over and over again so for me, DirectX 11 and 9 don't like it. Other settings such as AA, AF and resolution have no effect except on fps, frame buffer settings have no effect either for me. This is on the latest developer build, can't remember the exact version.
