As a side note. Direct3D 9 works fine, though I can only use my integrated graphics 4000 when I do this.

I have this exact same problem with the Nvidia Geforce GTX 660M graphics card. I'm not really adding to the solution here, but your aren't the only one with this problem. Thanks in advance if someone is able to help us!

I fixed it buddy! Go to your Nvidia control panel (right-click anywhere on the Desktop and select Nvidia Control Panel) and go to "Adjust Image Settings With Preview". From there, bubble the option that says "Let the 3D application decide." Now you can use the Video Card under Direct3d 9 in Dolphin.

I got the same problem, but it's the first time I get it. I haven't had that problem before, though it's the first time I run Dolphin in Windows 8 (my guess would be that it's Windows 8 related, but not sure.) Can everyone up there confirm you're using Windows 8 ?
I still get that problem when I use 3.5 (stable version).
Windows 8 x64
Intel Core I5 2410M @ 2.3 Ghz
Nvidia 525M GT

problem solved, you highlight openGL and integrated 4000 then open your game and at the the start screen you will see that the nvidia card will be used instead, you will also notice in other graphics card monitoring apps that yes it makes use of the nvidia GPU

That's not a solution, that's a workaround.

I've an Asus VivoBook S550CM-CJ087H with i7-3517U CPU, Intel HD 4000 integrated graphic card and NVIDIA Geforce GT 635M 2GB dedicated.
The same problem with Windows 8 64bit. Games can't run with the dedicated graphic card on Dolphin x64 with DX11 and don't appears this gc on the DX9 list. I can play quite good with OpenGL but I've read that DX9 runs faster than DX11 and OGL, I would like to test this. Please help!!

This is an Optimus driver issue.
If you have your driver set to use your dedicated GPU with Dolphin, it displays in dolphin as the Intel HD 4000 even though its running on the GPU. In addition to this, the dropdown still lets you select the Nvidia card, triggering this error.

Hi there, has any progress been made with this issue? I have recently bought a laptop and am very sad not to be able to utilize it with dolphin :(

Alpha: Not solved, no progress. Work around listed above doesn't really work properly, so no solution. Opengl is the best option.

I opened up Nvidia control panel and set Dolphin to run on my GT 650m instead of my HD4000.Then changed my graphics settings in dolphin to run Direct3D11 and selected the first GT650m and it worked.Let me know if this helped :)

Open dolphin folder, locate the exe, right click, launch with -> nvidia (high performance). Select the same gpu over graphics tab under dolphin. Launch any game. Tested on WIN8 64BITS 740M Nvidia. Greets

Suggest we resolve this considering how old the tested software revisions are both with Nvidia and Dolphin.
