Emulator Issues #619
closedOccasional semi-random crashes of RE1 (possible other games too) on WinXP 32 while it works without crashes at all on Vista 32.

Description
What steps will reproduce the problem?
- Run the game for some time (it inevitably will crash within 5 minutes -
45 minutes, sometimes it may work without crashes up to 1,5 hour but very
rarely) on WinXP 32, any build, IL or not IL. Particularly 2195 or 2276.

3.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The emulator crashes with such info in the exceptioninfo.txt (sometimes
with error window about fatal error, and sometimes without confiramtion
window at all):
This (most often):
Unhandled Exception
Code: 0xC0000005
Call stack info:
ntdll!0x7C9106C3 : RtlAllocateHeap
DolphinWxIL!0x00569D9C : ?
DolphinWxIL!0x00517EB5 : ?

or this:
Unhandled Exception

Call stack info:
ntdll!0x7C911E58 : RtlInitializeCriticalSection
ntdll!0x7C910D5C : wcsncpy

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
I tested it on many builds, ILs and not ILs. It's always the same -
occasional crashes. Particularly, 2195 IL. OS: WinXP SP2 32bit.
Please provide any additional information below.
The crashes are confirmed by other people already on official forum and on
other forum I visit. It works fine on Vista 32, but everyone who tried it
on XP32 seem to experience semi-random crashes.
This error may concern not only RE.

Correction to What steps will reproduce the problem? :
Not just run, but play. But sometimes emulator crashes when player doesn't do any
action too.
Correction to What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? :
Not "particularly" 2195 IL, but "for example".

Hello,
I have the same problem as 242, emulator crashes randomly (as it seems). My
operating system is sp3/32bit. Help!)
Updated by fagoatse almost 16 years ago
Strange thing, beacuse it does'n crash for me, win32 xp sp3 - rev 2195 and 2276.
Those crashes must be related to certain settings.
Updated by sergiy242 almost 16 years ago
fagoatse, thanks for the comment.
try15core, who made the comment above you, actually had the crashes on SP2, not on
SP3 (at least so far). He just has installed sp3 recently and reported that he had 2
play sessions for 1-1,5 hours each, and the game hasn't crashed so far. So it can be
only SP2 and below problem after all. AFAIR, SP3 installs a newer version of
ntdll.dll, and that could fix the problem. But I'm not sure.
How many hours have you played RE on SP3?

A guy just reported that he has exactly same issue on Vista. Heck.
Updated by ChaosCode almost 16 years ago
are u using opengl or dx plugin? opengl plugin has been having a mem leak.
Updated by sergiy242 almost 16 years ago
ChaosCode, OpenGL as pretty much everyone else (in this game at least, because it's
unplayable with d3d). The thing is that many people don't have the crashes, that's
what baffles me, they're able to finish the game without a single crash, I have about
30-50 of them while playing, f.e. yesterday 5-9 sudden crashes with that error in the
lab alone. As it seem now, in majority of cases the issue concerns people on xp32, I
may be wrong, but it's my observations so far. Only 1 person reported about the
crashes on Vista with the same error (ntdll:
RtlAllocateHeap/RtlInitializeCriticalSection)so far, while I know at least 4 people
on xp having exactly same issue.

Installed SP3.
Nothing changed, crashed after ~15 minutes with the same error:
Unhandled Exception
Code: 0xC0000005

ntdll!0x7C910193 : RtlAllocateHeap

As ChaosCode hinted, It could be related to the memory leak, so if the OS cannot
allocate memory because there's not enough, it might as well cause crashes.
How much RAM do you have ?
Updated by sergiy242 over 15 years ago
sl1nk3.s, I have 2GB.
Many people experience the crashes, while many others not. You may be right, may be
only those with enough RAM (4Gb or more) don't experience them.
Yesterday I played RE for 3 hours without a single crash (absolute record for me),
the only changes I made - turned off External Frame Buffer (I had it turned on to
play fullscreen) and turned on Stretch to fit. Could it help against crashes? I doubt
it though, probably I was just lucky yesterday, I'll play with the same settings
today and report back.

Yeah XFB with DC is dangerous and unstable.
Updated by sergiy242 over 15 years ago
Now I doubt it was XFB or DC, because I turned them on agian, and it doesn't crash still.
But the matter of fact is that the crashes suddenly stopped.
3 days without crashes at all, 8-10 hours in the game. It cannot be just cast of the
die, as average time without crash was earlier (during 2 weeks) 15-30 minutes. Pure
mysticism as for me.
Something of this could help, that's what I did between the "crashing period" and
moment RE1 unexpectedly stopped to crash:
-
Upgraded to Service Pack 3. However after I restart the computer (requested by SP3
install) and tried RE, it still crashed after 15 minutes. However it stopped to crash
on the next day. So if we suppose that it's SP3 that helped, we must also suppose
that cold restart after SP3 install is needed. And that's quite strange. Also, maybe
only save (I mean typewriter) made with SP3 installed started to work properly, i.e.
when I loaded from the old save made with SP2 it crashed, but after I stopped to use
old saves the game stopped to crash. Again, unlikely hyphotesis. -
Now I don't quite remember, but somewhere at the moment when the game stopped to
crash, I as well stopped to try and save using savestates. Perhaps the game saved
"officially" through typewriter if player quickloaded OR even only quicksaved before
during the game becomes corrupted... But again, it's not the new game that stopped to
crash, I was in the middle of Chris campaign when it stopped to crash, and I used to
quicksave my progress in the game in the first part and saved the game with the
typewriters.
Everything else stayed the same: emulator's build, game and emulator settings,
drivers, computer components.

#2 is unlikely at all, now when I think about it, as the game crashed like hell even
when I didn't know anything about savestates. I now think that it's either SP3+cold
restart that helped or only saves made with SP3 installed are safe.
Updated by XTra.KrazzY over 15 years ago
- Status changed from New to Fixed
it's #2.
I am researching the long-term effects of savestates, and yes, they tend to cause
crashes, especially JIT and TLB errors (junk-in-the-ram errors)
I'm closing this unless you say otherwise.
Updated by sergiy242 over 15 years ago
XTra.KrazzY, but as I wrote in the previous post the game kept crashing even when I
didn't know anything about savestates, and I didn't use them back then all!
The problem went away on the next day after I installed Service Pack 3, even though
it crashed one more time on the day I installed it. IF SP3 helped, either warm
restart wasn't enough somehow and cold restart was needed, or it stopped to crash
only after I loaded from the save (typewriter) made with SP3 already installed.
So, as for now, it's not yet apparent why it stopped to crash.
Updated by sergiy242 over 15 years ago
It's crashed one more time today, after 8-10 hours without a single crash during 3
previous days. But it was the end of the game, so I finished it already.
I'll replay the game again from the start and report.
Updated by sergiy242 over 15 years ago
Started the new game, played for 2 days, 6-8 hours since the start, no more crashes.
You can close the issue, but I'm still not sure what exactly cured the crashes.
