Emulator Issues #6246
closedFeature Request: Hotkey for z+ and z- in free look.
0%
Description
The current implementation of Free Look is really fantastic for people like myself who enjoy taking screenshots. One thing that is a constant annoyance though, is that there are no keys to increase or decrease your Z position.
Shift + W, A, S, or D moves you forward, back, left, and right respectively.
It would make taking screenshots of games much easier if Shift + R and Shift + F were to move you up, and down respectively.
Another cool feature for free look would be clockwise or counter clockwise roll, but I feel like that is less of an "overlooked" thing and would be much harder to implement.
I would love to see this put into newer builds so that taking high res screenshots could be even more of a pleasantry. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I probably do, I may have misspoke.
I clarified in the post however, the up and down rather than forward and backward.

Hold the right mouse button and look up. Then hold shift while pressing w. This works like free look in games such as counter strike.

I know of that, and that's the way that I've been doing it, it's just that for the sake of usability, it would be so much easier if there was a button that made you move up or down. When you're lining up angles for shots, it's really difficult to make your view aim exactly up, so you can move exactly up just a bit. A lot of times, looking directly up means you're looking at complete blackness, so you have no reference to know if you're looking straight up, or slightly off.
I recognize that it's not an essential tweak that the core of the Dolphin userbase would need, but it's a tweak that would make the feature immensely more usable.

That's awesome to hear, I'm really looking forward! Thanks for the quick response, I truly appreciate the effort.

It would feel better when Shift wasn't needed anymore for WASD and R. Instead, it can be used to decrease and Spacebar to increase, just like you would to crouch and jump in some PC games.

It's just the nature of this, wasd is normally used for game keyboard input. Freelook is a bit of a feature hack, so it has the shift modifier pass the key press onwards.

@rukarios
Personally, from my past experiences of using cheat engine to bind x, y, and z movement to the keyboard, I found the most convenient placing was the numpad with
8 forward
4 left
6 right
2 backward
9 up
3 down
So basically the numpad arrow keys would correspond to the forward, backward, left and right, and the 9 and 3 right next to the keys would be for altitude.
But, if the hot key will require you to be holding shift in order to move, then I think WASD + Q and E or WASD + R and F would work best. They seem more naturally intuitive, and they occupy a tighter space. I do totally understand your thought process behind it though and think it's a valid one, just that the other alternatives would probably be more useful.

@parlane If GPad was used than keyboard? Shift would just getting in your way. Perhaps some kind of toggle in hotkey setting whether should Shift be used or not for free-look?

I don't mean to sound too antsy, but I haven't had an issue accepted before so I'm just curious if there's a timeline of sorts on when features are updated?

Thanks for the speedy response, appreciated.
I'm looking forward to when it's implemented.

How is the progress? Is y-position too hard to implement? I guess you could finish free-lock hotkeys first... Having tab in hotkey setting dedicated to free-look hack would be great...

This is awesome news, thanks to everyone that contributed and if it was you Jasper who did it alone, you're the best.
