Game Name?
Metroid Prime

Game ID?
GM8E01

What's the problem? Describe what went wrong in few words.
The game experiences sudden, loud bursts of static periodically with DSP HLE enabled.

What did you expect to happen instead?
I expect no such noises.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
[Don't assume we have ever played the game and know any level names. Be as
specific as possible.]

  1. Set DSP Emulator Engine to HLE.
  2. Boot Metroid Prime.
  3. Play through. The issue is tricky to replicate on command, but it

Dolphin 3.5 and 3.5-367 are old versions of Dolphin that have
known issues and bugs, so don't report issues about them and test the
latest Dolphin version first.
Which versions of Dolphin did you test on?
4.0-607

Does using an older version of Dolphin solve your issue? If yes, which
versions of Dolphin used to work?

What are your PC specifications? (including, but not limited to: Operating
System, CPU and GPU)
OS: Windows 8.1 x64; CPU: Intel Core i7-4700MQ @3.2Ghz; GPU: nVidia GeForce GTX 765M w/ 2GB VRAM

Are you using the 32 or the 64 bit version of Dolphin?
64 bit

Is there any other relevant information? (e.g. logs, screenshots,
configuration files)

Whoops, didn't complete step 3. The issue is tricky to replicate on command, but it last happened to me during the Varia Suit acquisition cutscene.

Do you have a save just before it?

You know, I /wish/ I'd thought of that, but I saved over it. I honestly wasn't anticipating the bug to crop up at that moment. I was kind of hoping it wasn't an issue in master, as I had previously experienced it in a build from the tev-fixes-new branch.

The build cited in the bug report is from master, just to make things clear.

It would be a -very- good thing if you could provide a GCI before the instance where you encountered it. It will need to be reproduced if it is going to be fixed.

Alright, I got a static burst during the acquisition cutscene for the Artifact of Nature (Magmoor Caverns, Lava Lake; Fire two Missiles at the first stone column you come across)

GCI is attached. The save is in the first Save Station in Magmoor Caverns.

Can someone test to see if they can reproduce the issue? If so, assign me to that bug and I'll try to have a look at some point.

Reproduced four times. There is a single burst of static that takes place immediately before the collection jingle. Every time I tried it it occurred in the exact same spot in the jingle, so it's very reproducible. ...though the very last time it was kind of quiet, so it's worth doing multiple times.

Just to be sure, I tried the same spot with DSP LLE. There were some random, minor "burps", but I ran through the LLE test twice and it wasn't the same. The HLE static is the same no matter how many times I did it. So I'm just assuming the imperfections in LLE were just sound mixer garbage or speed issues or whatever random stuff. I'd definitely prefer is someone who knows this stuff tries it for themselves though.

Here are some better instructions on how to reproduce it: After loading the same, leave the save room and go left. Keep going straight, killing monsters as you go, until you reach a big room with a "Magmoor Caverns" introduction cinematic. In the middle of that room is a big column of rock. Fire two missiles at the column to reveal the artifact, and then collect it. Simple.

Does the issue happen in an audio dump? If so, could you upload the audio dump?

Actions #9

Updated by autofire372 over 10 years ago

Google won't let me upload the audio dump, and I don't trust any filesharing sites, but yes, the static does appear on audio dumps.

There you go, an audio dump of the issue. Cropped in audicity.

It may be worth nothing that there are at least two clicks in that audio dump.

This really doesn't seem like it should be a release critical bug when it was also in 4.0.

This one is a random error, so I'm not 100% sure it's fixed, but it should be. In this case, if someone runs into it, please post in this issue and we'll reopen it!
