Description

Game Name?
Smash bros melee, project m, digimon rumble arena 2, sonic riders, custom robo, sonic and the black knight
(every game I try to run)
Game ID?

What's the problem? Describe what went wrong in few words.
Dolphin freezes when opening games

What did you expect to happen instead?
the games should run

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Have two different versions of dolphin installed
  2. Start any game
  3. stop emulation
  4. start the game again, and it freezes immediately. It closes the whole program

If I then switch to the other installed version of dolphin, I can run that game again, but only once. then it would freeze if I tried again. After that, it works in the first version, but the problem repeats.

Dolphin 3.5 and 3.5-367 are old versions of Dolphin that have
known issues and bugs, so don't report issues about them and test the
latest Dolphin version first.
Which versions of Dolphin did you test on?
4.02 (in program files), 4.0-1146 (on desktop)

Does using an older version of Dolphin solve your issue? If yes, which
versions of Dolphin used to work?
No.

What are your PC specifications? (including, but not limited to: Operating
System, CPU and GPU)
Intel i-7 4870 4th gen, nvidia geforce 740, windows 8

Are you using the 32 or the 64 bit version of Dolphin?
4.0-1146 64 bit, 4.0.2 32 bit

What NVIDIA drivers are you using? What Graphics Backend are you using?

The driver I'm using is GeForce 335.23, and the graphics backend is OpenGL for both versions of dolphin. Also, I am just noticing that D3D11 is broken for all games in both versions regardless of the other issue. If I boot a game with D3D11 I just get 'Failed to enumerate outputs' and a crash, but I'm thinking it's a different issue because it crashes every time versus one success then later crashes.

What are you talking about? Program Files is just fine, and that's where our installer installs Dolphin by default...

Alright, so I tried using the software renderer with both programs to see if the problem was there too. I found that I can boot a game repeatedly with no issues on that backend, but if I open a game once with it and then try to run it with OpenGL, I get the same insta-crash that I would have gotten after a successful execution with OpenGL. Basically, OpenGL only works for any game the first time I open it after having opened the game in another version of dolphin. I also tried running a game successfully with OpenGL, switching to the other version of dolphin, running the game with the software renderer, then switching back, but it freezes. I actually have to run the game with OpenGL in the other version to let it run again in the first version.

Hope this helps.

Look's like it's a driver problem, i catched the same with 335.23, while 333.21 is doing just fine, if you're still wish to use 335.23, you have to disable Emulate Format Changes for some games before start

Besides this issue for me it's OGL only, D3D still doing fine

OGL crashes with 334.89+ Nvidia drivers, with different games(maybe all of them) when launching on the same build more than once, while 332.21 drivers are doing fine

I keep old 4.0-607 with old hacks and it crashes as the recent builds
Crach message says smth wrong with nvoglv64.DLL
but at the same time 4.0 release version works fine with new driver, so there must be some expalanation between them, will find

Yes, same .dll error I have seen. I am not so certain it is just driver related.

nvidia 337.50 I can't run any game in opengl at all. Also, when installing Geforce Experience, I can no longer sync the tr wiimote to the toshiba drivers to use with dolphin. Both of these things just worked fine last night (before the new driver install today).

r38fe05b1 of Degasus's Ogl-tex2d branch cause this

Actions #16

Updated by Autoran1 almost 10 years ago

but this not Degasus's fault, cause "buggy" driver was released about 3 months later than this commit

Actions #17

Updated by josephwbat almost 10 years ago

But if you use the "buggy" driver or newer drivers on dev builds before that there are no issues. I have tested that.

Actions #18

Updated by Autoran1 almost 10 years ago

Yup, use smth before Ogl-tex2d merge, this is about r450 and lower, or use 332.21 driver, but i've tested new 337.50 and it has some nice speedups on D3D

Yes, newer drivers are essential so using old one's is not ideal, especially with the new threaded improvements.

Okay, when I turned off fxaa in the nvidia drivers when using the 'manage 3d settings' area, dolphin started working again. Is that the culprit for anyone else?

I just try with latest drivers 337.88. Any game that have "[Video_Hacks]
EFBEmulateFormatChanges = True" crash under OpenGL backend.
