Description

When opening a Wii game via Dolphin, instead of starting the game immediately, launch directly to the Wii menu, and load the selected game into the disc channel; from there, the user will be able to start the game as they would on an actual Wii. As a result, this would make Dolphin better emulate the actual experience of playing on a Wii.

In Dolphin, the Gamecube has the ability to run BIOS before starting a the game, so the Wii should, as well.

Loading games from the system menu doesn't work yet.

Also, you can load the system menu manually, change disc to whatever, and then attempt to load it. So, I don't know what to think about this.

Yes, but as it currently is, I'd have to manually "Set As Default ISO" for the game I wish to play at the time, then manually open the system menu for the game to appear in the disc channel. It should be similar to how the Gamecube, via Dolphin, as the ability to run BIOS seamlessly when starting a game.

This is silly. If you want to launch the wii menu, launch the wii menu. If you want to launch a game with the Dolphin launcher, do that. Made all the more silly by the fact that launching from the system menu doesn't even work yet.

And I notice a lack of "option" in the original post.

MajoRoesch, It's not about launching the Wii menu or Wii games independently whenever I feel like it, of course I can do that; It's about emulating the Wii experience. When playing a game on the Wii, the game does not start instantly; it's launched via Wii menu.

For clarification, yes, it should be an option. Similarly how Gamecube (via Dolphin) has the option to 'Skip BIOS'. Perhaps 'Skip System Menu' for Wii?

I mean, you're not wrong, you know? It's just going to be hard to find someone to put in the work to add that.

Add the system menu to your gamelist, or install it and then load it from the menu. Then you can load whatever game you want now. If that's a good enough solution, we'll just mark this as a "future" enhancement of some sort.

Launching games from the System Menu now works as of Dolphin 4.0-1953, and I am ecstatic! Thanks you guys so much! However, is it possible to implement a way to boot into the system menu automatically (as Gamecube BIOS currently can in Dolphin) when launching a Wii game? For example, when I launch a Wii game, instead of directly booting into the game, it launches into the System Menu, and from there I can choose to either launch the game or do other things as I would on an actual Wii? Similarly how 'Skip BIOS' is an option for Gamecube, 'Skip System Menu' could be an option for Wii.

As it currently is, I still have to manually set the game as 'default ISO' prior to launching the System Menu, and that's not exactly seamless. Theoretically, with the limited knowledge I have, it would be as simple as automatically setting a launched Wii game temporarily as the 'default ISO' and automatically booting into the System Menu.

You know you can use Change Disc to swap discs on the fly right? Issue 7411 and its PR would make it even easier.

Plus, has JMC47 discovered during testing, the GameINIs, cheats, savestates, etc etc are only available for the -first game loaded-. Until that problem is resolved, which it may not be, the suggestion given in this issue is untenable.

Yes, I don't mean being able to change discs on the fly while still in the menu. I mean on each launch, open said launched game in the disc channel. I just want the system menu to appear when launching a game from Dolphins UI, not the ability to swap discs while in the system menu.

This doesn't make sense to me, honestly. You can have the system menu in your gamelist, and there's no option in the Wii to autoboot games like in the GameCube, PS2 and other systems. So, why do we make this feature? I think we should make disc changing easier (which is something I requested) but unless the Wii has an actual feature of it, I don't see the point.

The default ISO thing is as good as you're going to get. If there was for some reason a huge desire for this feature (there isn't) then I could an inkling of hope that someone would add it? Maybe?

But the potential caveats of it are huge. People who don't have Wii NAND dumps CAN'T boot games from the System Menu, and there will be tons of people bitching about it. Even if you have the system menu installed, from my experience it still requires a NAND dump.

I'll leave this open for now, but the chances of it being implemented are very low.

I believe there may be a misunderstanding. When I launch a game, I want the system menu to boot with the game I launched in the disc channel.

I'm aware that the Wii dies not Autoboot, and that's the point! I believe the experience should resemble the experience on the actual hardware. People already have to dump BIOS from their consoles to get GameCube, PS2, and other BIOSs to boot before the game, so having to dump the NAND (which I did not for some reason) shouldn't be that much of a deal.

  • Status changed from Questionable to Won't fix

This has been sitting here for two years so I'm getting the last build.

If you want to boot the System Menu, there's an option for it in the tools menu. You can change discs in it if you want. you can exit games and return to the system menu if you want and switch games.

There's no reason to further clutter the UI with an option that is likely to annoy 99.9% of users. If you really hate the tools menu, put the system menu wad in the gamelist and boot it like a game.
