Game Name?
Any. the video backend won't init.

Game ID?
Any.

What's the problem? Describe what went wrong in few words.
Failed to initialize video backend!
What did you expect to happen instead?
For any game to run better without glitches.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
[Don't assume we have ever played the game and know any level names. Be as
specific as possible.]

  1. Open Dolphin 4.x.x on Windows or OSX (both should act either the same or similar.)
  2. try to run either the Wii Menu, VC, WiiWare, or any Wii or GC Game.
  3. Warning screen with the message should appear.

Dolphin 3.5 and 3.5-367 are old versions of Dolphin that have
known issues and bugs, so don't report issues about them and test the
latest Dolphin version first.
Which versions of Dolphin did you test on?
any version of 4.0, either stable or dev. builds

Does using an older version of Dolphin solve your issue? If yes, which
versions of Dolphin used to work?

What are your PC specifications? (including, but not limited to: Operating
System, CPU and GPU)
OSX Lion, Xeon 2.26 Quad Core, 8gb Ram
(Mac Pro 2006)

3.5 does, but the glitches with sound and video that never got fixed in that release and is the only version that will work for me.

Mac Pro from 2006, huh? What's the GPU?

And what I mean is it's the first generation Mac Pro.

  • Status changed from New to Invalid

None of the three GPUs originally available with the Mac Pro in 2006 are capable of anything past OpenGL 2.1. Dolphin requires GL 3.3 nowadays, upgrade your GPU.

The gfx card is the gt 7300

Yup, unsupported graphics card. Sorry.

That's a GPU from 2007, no one is going to support a 7-year old GPU.

Then what do I do if I want to run the latest dolphin release on it?

And I got that mac as a Christmas present last year too.

The GPU fails to meet the minimum requirements to Dolphin. It is a 7 year old graphics card that lacks OpenGL 3 support in any form.

Turns out you can't even upgrade to any decent GPU since the machine still uses a 32-bit EFI. You'd have to go with the 8800GT, HD 2600, HD 3870, or HD 4870. If you feel capable of flashing an HD 4890, that seems like it'll work too. Anything newer than these handful of models has no 32-bit EFI support, and anything older has no GL 3.3 support.

If all else fails, I'd just buy a newer computer. This thing won't perform too well regardless of whether you have a GL 3.3-capable GPU in it – the CPU's pretty dated at this point, and just because it's socketed and upgradeable doesn't mean you can upgrade it to anything good enough for Dolphin.

It's kind of a shame, really. I'd love to own an old tower-style Mac Pro with more modern hardware in it.

If you have any more questions, direct them to the forums – the issue tracker's not the place for this kind of conversation. https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/
