Game Name?

Game ID?

What's the problem? Describe what went wrong in few words.
Translations of Dolphin are completely outdated (latest was done more than 18 months ago).

What did you expect to happen instead?
Software should be fully translated for new release.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
[Don't assume we have ever played the game and know any level names. Be as
specific as possible.]
1.
2.
3.

Dolphin 3.5 and 3.5-367 are old versions of Dolphin that have
known issues and bugs, so don't report issues about them and test the
latest Dolphin version first.
Which versions of Dolphin did you test on?
4.0.2xxx+

Does using an older version of Dolphin solve your issue? If yes, which
versions of Dolphin used to work?

What are your PC specifications? (including, but not limited to: Operating
System, CPU and GPU)

Is there any other relevant information? (e.g. logs, screenshots,
configuration files)

Build bot from Transiflex died more than a year ago. Latest attempt from Marlane reverted some translations from Transiflex and did not import new ones to Transiflex.

I'm willing to accept this. This hasn't been done in a long time and should probably be done before the next release. I'll look into it but don't consider this to be a huge blocker for the next release.

I looked into it a little bit and it seems one of the project maintainers will have to update the source files manually. After that some strings will have to be translated again or changed. At some point before the next release a string freeze will have to come into effect and the strings that will go into the release can be pulled for a pull request.

This should probably done when dolphin is closer to the next release.

Don't forget that people need time to translate text, so don't do it too late ;)

I think we're at an issue where absolutely nobody active on the project has any idea how to fix the translation.

Sorry, I can't help you. All I did is to translate strings. But this is not good news :(

We can use Dolphin's Wiki to let anyone add/edit various language. Far more people will be familiar with editing Wiki articles than editing strings, and we can label exactly what menu/description are outdated in the settings. Then let developers copy/paste them into the strings.

Perhaps we'd need to dumb something down in the English file and leave error/warning screens, etc., in English, something that users wouldn't see them often? It can be a secondary English file (as a template file) meant to translate easier and will contain less strings than actual English file.

As far as I remember, it's not that hard (at least from my understanding). Dolphin already has an account at Transifex where we (translators) usually translate all strings. From the time delroth implemented it, I remember that in Dolphin's source code we have a .pot file which contain the english strings and a bot used to maintain the .pot file from Transifex synced with the .pot file from Dolphin's source. Whenever new strings were added in Dolphin code, this .pot file would be updated and the bot would sync the .pot file from Transifex again. At Transifex side, whenever a new revision of the .pot file arrived it sent email notifications to the translators and then we would go to Transifex to translate the new strings. Then, periodically, someone (not sure if it were a bot) "exported" the translations from Transifex and commit them back into Dolphin's code.

From what I can tell, simply updating the .pot file from Transifex would update all source strings added since the last sync (from the beginning of 2014 if I remember correctly) and notify the translators. Then, simply exporting the updated translations back to Dolphin would "fix" the languages, right?

The Transifex page is located at https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/dolphin-emu/

jhonn last time I did this I ended up erasing a lot of translated strings on transifex <_<

Actions #11

Wow

Do you have any idea of what happened? Also, what exactly do you need to provide as "source" in Transifex? A .pot file or something else?

Actions #12

Updated by parlane almost 9 years ago

Um it most likely comes down to me not knowing what I am doing.. I tried to run delroths old scripts to do the translation... And.. I don't know what I am doing :(

Commit 4.0-6550 looks good. I finished the french translation, I can't wait to see if it works fine now :D

Hey pascal, you aren't going to like this. But I will push some more strings for translation soon :P

Actions #15

Updated by pascal.jouy almost 9 years ago

I already translated more than 300 strings today, so I think it won't be a problem as long as you don't delete what I already translated :P

Ok it looks like it's working as intended!
Only 14 strings left to translate on french now :)

Your other translations are in Dolphin now.

Great job!
Translation of the new strings is done.
By te way, some translations are still shown in English in Dolphin (even if they are translated in Transifex): all the strings in the Descrption field (in video settings) and the CPU engine (Interpreter/JIT/JITIL).

Actions #18

Updated by parlane almost 9 years ago

And now all your translations are in Dolphin. I'll ask someone to look at the Interpreter strings etc

Great!

I looked in the software for untranslated strings. Here is what I found in build 4.0-6606:

  • Video settings: the "Description" field always shows text in English (but translated in Transifex)
  • Video settings, Stereoscopic 3D modes: the list view is not translated (I did not see that text in Transifex)
  • Controller settings: all the "None" text are not translated
  • Keyboard shortcuts: everything is in English (but translated in Transifex)

Many thanks for your work!

Actions #20

I believe all of your issues are fixed except for "Keyboard Shortcuts", this is a bigger issue. The displayed English values are the system ones as far as I can tell. Unless you meant something other than RSHIFT and LSHIFT etc?

Actions #21

Updated by pascal.jouy almost 9 years ago

I was speaking about the "Action" column in the keyboard shortcuts, not the buttons.
Try to switch to the french language and you'll se what I mean ;)
BTW, I have translated the new strings.
I manage the french language team (actually I am translating enverything for now), so there is no need to accept new users ;)

Again, thanks a a lot!

  • Status changed from Accepted to Fixed

Marking as fixed as it is an ongoing translation and we are up to date with transifex. Thanks for your help Pascal.
