Emulator Issues #9377
closed[feature request] add a check for update button on the help menu of dolphin
0%
Description
not sure if its possible to do but would be really cool if we could check for updates after opening dolphin. like if dolphin can check the site and see if there is an update number > than the emulators current update number.

Maybe dolphin could also either check or show the newest progress reports (either by opening the browser or saving a file with the progress report on it and showing it kinda like steam). It would also be cool if there was a bug report button in the help menu that can automatically upload an error report or send you to this site. Lastly, maybe a direct link to the texture packs that's called "looking for high res textures, click here" or something. I'm not sure if its possible, and its certainly not necessary, I just think it could be convenient.

This wouldn't be a bad idea except for the fact that when you update Dolphin, you're going to invalidate your shader cache causing shader compilation stuttering again for every game unless nvidia drivers save you with their silent caching. Users would not understand that and get very annoyed, possibly making support threads that are simply them not understanding shader compilation. Additionally, we often change config file things which can modify or break user settings randomly. I don't know how much of an issue that will be with HdkR's new config system, but it's something to note.
I'd be okay with this (And maybe implement it myself after feature freeze) if we made a dialog box that told the user what updating will do, and the pitfalls they might will run into.

This could also help you guys find a problem with a current revision if mulitiple games break at the same time, more users will find this website and will be able to report, meaning problems can be found quicker, and solutions as well. (this may help also with games that could be potentially broken for months but are hardly played, that could point to much larger issues with the emulator).
@Helios: I'm not saying it should update dolphin (maybe move the shader's into the dolphin folder instead of the emus folder if possible), I'm just asking if it could automatically open their browser to show there is a new revision if there is one.

Shader cache invalidation happens whenever you update GPU drivers, change GPUs, or update Dolphin. It doesn't happen because Dolphin deletes the contents. Dolphin deletes the contents because it has to. The old shader cache is useless with different code.
IMO more users finding this site is a double edged sword. :P We might get more valid reports / confirmations, but we would also get a lot of bogus reports and many would try to use it as a support forum.

Ah that's why you guys recommend deleting the older version of dolphin instead of copying right over it then. Your second point is a good point as well.

No, having to delete the old version's Sys folder is related to game INIs, not shaders. The shaders are stored elsewhere, and Dolphin will automatically delete them when needed.

I'm going to merge this with issue 7453, treating that issue as the general issue for auto-updating or checking whether there are any updates.
