Game Name?
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness

Game ID?
GXXE01

What's the problem? Describe what went wrong in few words.
In Agate Village, when purifying a Shadow Pokemon at the Relic Stone, the audio slows to a crawl. Message boxes also seem to take a while for the text to appear, but that may be unrelated.

What did you expect to happen instead?
I expected the purification animation to work properly.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
[Don't assume we have ever played the game and know any level names. Be as
specific as possible.]

  1. Play the game until you reach the point where you purify a Shadow Pokemon at Agate Village's Relic Stone.
  2. Observe the lag in action.
    3.

Dolphin 3.5 and 3.5-367 are old versions of Dolphin that have
known issues and bugs, so don't report issues about them and test the
latest Dolphin version first.
Which versions of Dolphin did you test on?
4.0-1711

Does using an older version of Dolphin solve your issue? If yes, which
versions of Dolphin used to work?
No idea.

What are your PC specifications? (including, but not limited to: Operating
System, CPU and GPU)
I use a MSI GT-60 with Windows 8.1 64-bit, an Intel i7-4810MQ processor, and an Nvidia GTX 880m GPU, along with 16 gigs of DDR3 RAM. (Full system specs can be seen on the Newegg profile of said laptop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=%20N82E16834152553)

Are you using the 32 or the 64 bit version of Dolphin?
64-bit

Is there any other relevant information? (e.g. logs, screenshots,
configuration files)
[Upload big files to a hosting service and post links here!]
I have absolutely no lag anywhere else in the game, as far as I have noticed.

I should add, I'm using the LLE audio emulation, not HLE, and the OpenGL backend.

Use HLE audio; this game shouldn't require LLE audio. LLE audio tends to slowdown during sound effects that have a lot of... well, effects on them. If it's LLE audio causing slowdown, it's not a glitch.

If it's a really huge special effect causing slowdown, then it may also not be a true issue, just something to be optimized and looked at.

Please confirm this happens in HLE audio.

Confirmed. Issue is exactly as bad in HLE audio.

That still doesn't mean this is a valid issue; it just means it's doing something on the graphics/CPU thread that's weird. I don't know exactly what it is; but there may be nothing we can do about it in the short term.

Either way, even if it's not a valid issue doesn't mean it's not being worked on, it just wouldn't belong on the issue tracker. I have no way of confirming one way or another, so I'll leave this here.

Well, is there any sort of additional information I can provide to help?

You could go through a bunch of settings in the graphics plugin and see if any help. Skip EFB Access to CPU can cause slowdowns like these, for instance. Other than that, it could be something to do with EFB2Ram, or the texture cache, Internal Resolution being too high...

Hm...I do have EFB to RAM enabled...and it looks like cache is set to safe rather than fast... and a high internal resolution...it will be a bit before I can test any changes, though, I'm out of Shadow Pokemon to purify for now.

Changed EFB2RAM to EDB2Texture, changed cache to fast. No change.

Lowered internal resolution as much as I could, didn't fix it, but definite improvement. Still horrible audio lag, though, but at least it's not almost freezing.

I'm fairly certain this kind of issue doesn't belong on the issue tracker. Emulating certain aspects of the GameCube and Wii hardware are just extremely difficult. While were are always looking to optimize, it doesn't make it a bug when things are slow. Your processor is very fast, your graphics card is good, but some things are just extremely difficult to emulate, and it seems that the game is doing something strange for purifying shadow Pokemon.

It may be fixed by general optimizations in the future, though, so always keep up with the latest versions.

Alright. I just thought it was an issue since the slowdown only happened in one extremely specific instance.

For it to be really interesting, we'd have to figure out exactly what the game is doing. One of the graphics people in the team may look at it eventually.

There is no lag when you purify Shadow Pokémon through the Lab, thankfully.

I investigated this a bit. The game requires safe texture cache, and safetexture cache is very slow.

When the inevitable texture cache rewrite is done, this should be something that is fixed. I'll condense all the issues about it when I get time.

I don't have any shadow Pokemon to purify, so it will be a little while before I can test it.

I'm not seeing any lag right now. I think it's more "Safe Texture Cache is demanding" stuff, so closing this issue. Of course, the whole optimizing the emulator task remains a goal, so even if it still isn't full speed, it will continue to be worked on with or without this issue. It just seems to be too specific to belong on the tracker any longer.
