If you don't have a full NAND installed, then this is expected. Did you dump a full NAND from your Wii?

Going back to the system menu means you're using an improperly dumped NAND and things aren't working correctly. I cannot guess why it is happening for you, but I do know with a properly dumped NAND from my Wii everything is still working correctly. If it has never worked for you, I have to assume it's user error on some part.

So the nand dump worked, but that caused a new issue: whenever I open the wii system menu, my Real WiiMote disconnects. I can reconnect it, but it disconnects again after a few seconds. Is this related or does it warrant a new ticket?

That depends on your bluetooth and whatnot, this can be closed though. It could be an IOS issue even... no idea.
