Description

Game Name?

At least Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64 and Star Fox 64.

Game ID?

NABE01, NAAE01 and NADE01, in the same order.

What's the problem? Describe what went wrong in few words.

At least those N64 games look darker than they should. White isn't white, it's gray.

Using an image editor (Paint.NET), a white cloud in MK64, with a screenshot taken from the Project64 emulator, gives a FFFFFF color (absolute white, all color components at max). That same cloud gives a BEBEBE color (190 out of 255 for all color components).

Screenshots of this case:

In Mario Kart 64, there is a brief time where the issue disappears for less than a second, after winning a race, when the characters windows move around the screen (that movement produces slowdowns, that's why I could see it clearly).

The Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time is unaffected by this issue, for example. Both VC and Gamecube versions.

What did you expect to happen instead?

Correct brightness, like in the real console and other N64 emulators.

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Play N64 games
  2. See that they are too dark.

Dolphin 3.5 and 3.5-367 are old versions of Dolphin that have
known issues and bugs, so don't report issues about them and test the
latest Dolphin version first.
Which versions of Dolphin did you test on?

Latest Dolphin build 4.0-6988, 4.0-144 and Ishiiruka 391. Both D3D and OpenGL backends have the problem.

Does using an older version of Dolphin solve your issue? If yes, which
versions of Dolphin used to work?

None of the builds I've tried work correctly.

What are your PC specifications? (including, but not limited to: Operating
System, CPU and GPU)

  • Intel Core i5 4670k @ 4.4GHz.
  • Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 760, with 350.12 drivers.
  • 8GB of RAM at 1866MHz CL8.
  • Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Is there any other relevant information? (e.g. logs, screenshots,
configuration files)

Nintendo did this to make it look more like CRT output. I checked it on my Wii when investigating games; Virtual Console is just more washed out.

Isn't there any possibility for a workaround or an option for this? For example, Nintendo is screwing many Wii U VC games this way, and I think we should be able to play them with the correct colors. Think about this as an enhancement over Nintendo's mistakes.

I'll try some post processing options to see if I can make colors more similar to the original brightness.
