Is this the only game that it happens with? Does it happen in Dolphin 5.0?

Sounds like you may have a bad image. I have a Newer game image which works fine here.
Does it work on a real console?

I don't think this is a valid issue:
I have tried running Newer Super Mario Bros. (Using SMNP01) using the latest Dolphin build without any problems whatsoever.
The image was probably patched improperly, resulting in this crash.
Suggesting to mark this as invalid until further testing is done on a real console.
