Description

Game Name?
Mario Kart Wii

Game ID?
RMCP01

What's the problem? Describe what went wrong in few words.

With Dolphin 4.0.2, Mario Kart Wii is really slow (including sound stuttering), even when switching to Direct3D9.

What did you expect to happen instead?

Have it run as good as with Dolphin 3.5, Mario Kart Wii runs great using the default Direct3D9 settings with it.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
[Don't assume we have ever played the game and know any level names. Be as
specific as possible.]

  1. Install Dolphin 4.0.2
  2. Run Mario Kart Wii using either Direct3D setting
    3.

Which versions of Dolphin did you test on?
4.0.2

Does using an older version of Dolphin solve your issue? If yes, which
versions of Dolphin used to work?
Yes, 3.5

What are your PC specifications? (including, but not limited to: Operating
System, CPU and GPU)
Windows 8.1 x64, Intel Core i3-2330M, Intel HD Graphics 3000

Are you using the 32 or the 64 bit version of Dolphin?
x64

Is there any other relevant information? (e.g. logs, screenshots,
configuration files)

The problem is that Dolphin has gotten more accurate since the release of 3.5, which means that it uses more CPU.

Basically, this isn't an issue of Dolphin doing something wrong, but of your computer growing more outdated as time goes on.

We also don't accept performance bugs against non dev versions.

Okay, thanks...
Maybe somehow mark the older version on the download-page as better fitting for low-spec systems then?

Usually I don't respond to suggestions like that, but, I understand where you're coming from.

The reason this is not done is because older versions emulate less stuff less accurately, and thus are buggier. Old AX-HLE can simply stop up and freeze hundreds of games (MKWii is included in that, to my knowledge) as well as missing effects, missing features (Online play in this game) and other critical features to playing it without trouble. If we suddenly start recommending older versions to people, then they'll just complain about all the old bugs.

We do support people going and finding what version works for them the best; we leave the older builds around for that purpose. But, beyond that, they are unsupported and will cause us many headaches in the future.

Do not give up completely on Dolphin's newer versions; we also do add optimizations, new features, and speedups that aren't present in older versions periodically. Newer doesn't always mean slower. In fact, Mario Kart Wii is just one of those games that run a ton worse for me since 3.5 (when I too, could run it on my laptop!) but now, even my desktop struggles. It's just one of those things where emulation has gotten better, the game plays more like it does on Wii, but unfortunately, there's nothing more.

As not to cause a conversation to break out on the issue tracker, if you have further questions about performance and issues, please take them to the forums. If they regard bugs on outdated versions, you'll likely be turned away, but there should be a bevy of information already there from when 3.5 was released and prior.

I've been trying 4.0-6896 today and the performance has improved greatly. It's even much better than with 3.5.

Thanks for your work guys! :)
